After trying the nerfed Breaker Incendiary Shotgun in Helldivers 2, I’m left wondering…what is all the fuss about?

As a seasoned gamer with years of combat under my belt in the Helldivers universe, I must confess that I have been guilty of neglecting one side of the fight – the Terminids. But, after diving headfirst into their realm and optimizing my loadout, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been missing out on half the fun all this time!

To begin with, let me clarify that in Helldivers 2, I’m an expert at defeating Automatons, and I’d roughly guess my ratio of Automaton to Terminid battles is about 90% to 10%. The tactical nature of bot missions appeals more to me as a player. However, I recognized that I was missing out on half the fun by avoiding Terminids, so I made a conscious decision to mix things up.

Over the last several days, I’ve mainly concentrated on Terminids, and after fine-tuning my equipment setup, I’ve been having a blast with it. Admit it, an inefficient setup was significantly dampening my gaming experience. That’s why I often conclude my posts by suggesting our loadout improvement guides.

Over time, I’ve been engaging more with the Terminids, which has given me an opportunity to test out the diverse Shotguns within the game. However, these weapons aren’t ideal for dealing with Automatons, making them my least utilized type. Prior to the Escalation of Freedom update, the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun was the preferred primary weapon in Helldivers 2, but now that various weapons have been weakened, players are on the hunt for a replacement. Since I’m not overly familiar with or emotionally invested in this particular weapon, I decided to give the Cookout Shotgun a try and form my opinion based on its current state rather than its past reputation. Frankly, I can’t understand all the excitement because the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun remains an excellent weapon and is highly effective against Terminids.

As a dedicated Helldivers 2 player, I’ve always treasured the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun for its knack of swiftly dispatching Terminid foes, particularly the less robust ‘chaff’ types like Scavengers, Warriors, and Hunters. It’s also a reliable choice for tackling tougher adversaries such as Nursing Spewers, especially when I can’t switch to my backup Stratagem or summon an Eagle or Orbital strike. However, the latest adjustments to fire damage have dampened both the Breaker Incendiary and Flamethrower’s effectiveness, but rest assured, Arrowhead Game Studios is working diligently to rectify this issue as part of their 60-day roadmap.

Although the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun has been toned down (nerfed), it remains an exceptionally potent weapon. I believe it’s still superior to, or at least equally effective as, the Cookout Shotgun in many situations. The Cookout Shotgun delivers more damage per shot, but its slower rate of fire and greater recoil make it better for targeting a single enemy, such as a Warrior, rather than mowing down multiple Terminids with a spray-and-pray approach.

With the Cookout Shotgun being part of the new Freedom’s Flame Warbond, I highly recommend checking it out as it is a great shotgun, and you should aim to unlock the fire-resistant armor as soon as possible to help with missions on planets such as Hellmire. But, I also wouldn’t write off the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun just yet despite the nerfs, which decreased the amount of magazines you can carry and increased the recoil. Even with the nerfs, the Breaker Incendiary has a much lower recoil than the Cookout, 41 vs 100, and you can still carry 100 shells across the four magazines, compared to the maximum of 60 that you can carry with the Cookout Shotgun.

Absolutely, my thoughts are merely personal, and everyone has their unique tastes when it comes to the equipment they choose for the Galactic War. However, if you’ve discarded the Breaker Incendiary Shotgun due to its recent adjustments, I urge you to reconsider. If you find that you need to alter your loadout, I strongly suggest you review our guides on the top weapons and armor in Helldivers 2.
