As a cinephile who’s been following Indian cinema for over three decades now, I must say that Kalki 2898 AD has truly left its mark in 2024. The sheer star power and the captivating storyline drew me in, just like a moth to a flame.
2024 saw one of the most triumphant pan-Indian releases in recent times with Kalki 2898 AD. Starring heavyweights from Indian cinema like Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and more, this film has made a lasting impact on audiences. Whispers suggest that following its successful theater and Netflix debut, the movie has earned an Oscar nomination for 2025.
It appears that the widespread excitement implies that Prabhas’s movie could potentially win in the Best Visual Effects category at the Oscars 2025. However, contrary to popular belief, this speculation is actually incorrect. Although the film does boast some impressive futuristic graphics and VFX, it will not be winning the award as previously suggested.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s list of prospective Oscar nominees for 2025, Kalki from the year 2898 AD wasn’t included among the initial 26 hopefuls.
As a devoted follower, I’ve learned that if Kalki manages to secure an Oscar nomination in 2898 AD, it seems unlikely that the final list will be unveiled prior to December.
Previously, the movie directed by Nag Ashwin was nominated for the 97th Academy Awards. Unfortunately, in the end, it wasn’t chosen; instead, Laapata Ladies won.
By August 2024, the movie Kalki had accumulated a global box office revenue of approximately Rs. 980 crores, securing its position as the fifth highest-grossing Indian film.
Indeed, it’s clear that the movie’s ability to keep viewers engaged for the longest duration is largely thanks to Prabhas’ rising fame. However, it’s equally important to acknowledge the exceptional acting talents displayed by Deepika Padukone, Rana Daggubati, seasoned actors like Kamal Haasan and Amitabh Bachchan in their roles as well.
Following a successful cinema premiere on June 27, 2024, the producers also made the movie available for streaming. Similarly, the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam adaptations of the film were launched on Amazon Prime.
Conversely, the Hindi adaptation of Kalki set in 2898 AD was made available on the worldwide streaming service, Netflix.
