AEW Star MJF Praises John Cena’s Heel Turn at WWE Elimination Chamber: Toronto

Previously known AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) commended John Cena for his surprising villainous transformation at the WWE Elimination Chamber event in Toronto. Renowned for his exceptional skills as a heel, MJF has predominantly played the role of an antagonist throughout his AEW tenure.

In 2023, MJF had a brief stint as a good guy or ‘babyface,’ but a shoulder injury halted his journey later that year. When he came back in 2024, at first he continued to play the babyface role, but eventually, he reverted back to his villainous ‘heel’ character.

Ever since then, he’s had rivalries with Will Ospreay, Adam Cole, Jeff Jarrett, and more recently, Hangman Page. Their confrontation is scheduled this weekend at AEW Revolution 2025, in a highly anticipated grudge match. Known for his villainous role, MJF expressed admiration for John Cena’s betrayal of Cody Rhodes and partnership with The Rock, labeling it an “amazing moment.

MJF on John Cena’s shocking heel turn: ‘It was an awesome moment’

He declared, “John Cena is a close friend of mine. It really bugs me when individuals in either industry feign ignorance about our shared passion. To put it simply, yes, I was tuned in. I was watching it live. It was an incredible spectacle, and everyone should acknowledge its greatness because it truly was. Period. That’s it. Case closed. If you are involved in professional wrestling, can you honestly call yourself a connoisseur if you don’t immerse yourself as much as possible in the world of pro wrestling? Can you argue that you’re giving your best effort? Can you boast about being one of the greats if you don’t? In my view, no, absolutely not.

Cena and MJF have a history with one another. Towards the end of 2023, they were seen side by side at the premiere of Iron Claw. Even though they’re from opposing promotions, Cena commended MJF for his professional demeanor during their encounter, as he expressed admiration for him.
