As per a recent update from Anton, actor Theo James is set to join the cast of “The Bookie & the Bruiser,” working alongside Vaughn. Although Anton did not provide explicit details, it’s been previously suggested that Brody was initially planned to play a role in the movie, based on reports about the film’s early stages last year.

In the movie, it’s not evident why Brody was swapped out for another actor. Interestingly, the lead actor had just won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the 2024 film The Brutalist. Now, James will assume the role and portray Rivner, a Jewish character who teams up with Vaughn, an Italian American, to operate an illegal gambling ring as a bookmaker and enforcer.

In the latest developments, James has played leading roles in three notable productions: “The Monkey” by Neon, released in 2024; “The White Lotus” on HBO; and “The Gentlemen,” directed by Guy Ritchie.

The Movie ‘The Bookie & the Bruiser’ is created and supervised by S. Craig Zahler, his initial full-length film since the release of ‘Dragged Across Concrete’ in 2018. Anthony Katagas, a producer who won an Oscar for ’12 Years a Slave’, will produce this movie through Keep Your Head Productions together with Dave Caplan.

1959 New York serves as the backdrop for ‘The Bookie & the Bruiser’. This gripping tale centers around two former war comrades, Rivner – a thoughtful Jewish man, and Boscolo – a muscular Italian-American, both hailing from the Lower East Side. Their lives were drastically altered after serving in WWII, finding it difficult to adapt back into their old lives.

Instead of following orders from superiors or adhering to societal norms, these two friends decide to establish an unlawful gambling business. One becomes the bookmaker, while the other takes on the role of enforcer. This venture turns out to be quite lucrative, but also carries significant risks. Matters become increasingly complicated when they find themselves caught in a power struggle between an influential Irish gang and the Mafia.
