Adam Sandler revealed during an interview that the production of his upcoming Netflix film, titled Happy Gilmore 2, underwent some difficult adjustments following the passing of Carl Weathers. In the original 1996 movie, Weathers portrayed Derick “Chubbs” Peterson. Known for his roles in the Rocky films, Toy Story 4, and the 1987 classic Predator, Weathers passed away in 2024.
How Carl Weathers’ Chubbs would have returned in Happy Gilmore 2’s initial script
In an intriguing chat with Collider, Adam Sandler shared that the original draft for Happy Gilmore 2 featured a significant role for the legendary Carl Weathers as Chubbs. Tragically, we lost this talented artist, which led to a complete overhaul of the script.
We underwent a significant shift, with Carl Weathers playing a crucial role, as Sandler described. ‘I used to discuss our project with Carl,’ he said, ‘and we were both enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately, Carl passed away, which led us to rewrite much of the script and even alter the storyline. We paid tribute to Chubbs’ greatness in the original film by making several heartfelt references,’ Sandler continued.
In the original script for the sequel, it was planned that Chubbs, who was both Happy’s coach and mentor, had a son. According to Sandler, this son frequently appeared in his dreams, and in one of these visions, he was shown to be angry with Happy because he felt responsible for his father’s demise.
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share this: When Weathers passed away, it necessitated changes in the script for Happy Gilmore 2. However, prior to this, Kyle Newacheck, our director, had shared with the same media outlet that they aimed to infuse Chubbs’ “essence” or “spirit” into every scene of the movie.
Adam Sandler wrote the screenplay for the first movie together with Tim Herlihy. They teamed up again to write the sequel’s script. The cast features Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin.
Happy Gilmore 2 is scheduled for release on July 25 on Netflix.
