As a long-time admirer of Kasthuri Shankar‘s work, I must admit that this recent turn of events has left me both disheartened and bewildered. The actress, known for her versatile roles in films like “Indian,” “Annamayya,” and “Godfather,” seems to have found herself embroiled in a controversy that overshadows the brilliance of her craft.
Kasthuri Shankar is said to have disappeared following a police case against her due to remarks deemed offensive to the Telugu community. According to Kerala Kaumudi’s report, the actress requested anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court prior to her disappearance. In simpler terms, Kasthuri faced public backlash after making disrespectful comments towards people who speak Telugu.
At a function held in Tamil Nadu, an actress asserted that Telugu people originate from ancient court performers who catered to royalty. Subsequently, numerous petitions were lodged against her across the state, including cities like Madurai and Chennai, due to her provocative public remarks. Quickly addressing these complaints, officials served legal notices to Kasthuri.
According to a report by Kerala Kaumudi, when the police arrived at Kasthuri’s residence in Poes Garden for further interrogation, they discovered her house was locked. Moreover, her phone was turned off and there was no sign of her. It is speculated that she could be hiding in Andhra Pradesh based on current reports.
During this time, the actress responded to criticism following her comment about the Telugu community by publishing a public statement. She posted on her social media platform saying, “I’ve been threatened and attacked over the past two days, but these incidents have only strengthened my determination. Today, a highly respected brother from the Telugu community gently clarified to me the impact of my word choice on the entire Telugu population in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Kasthuri continued, “I didn’t mean to cause harm or upset to my extended Telugu family. I apologize for any unintentional distress caused. To maintain harmony and avoid further misunderstandings, I retract all mentions of Telugu from the speech I gave on November 3rd, 2024. This dispute has taken attention away from the crucial points I discussed in that speech.
