In my capacity as a lifestyle expert, I find it regrettable that I found myself in the headlines recently. On Saturday, November 16, I was taken into custody by the Hyderabad police. The reason? Allegedly, some comments I made about the Telugu-speaking community residing in Tamil Nadu were deemed controversial and derogatory, prompting several legal complaints to be filed against me. As per a report by Deccan Herald, these actions were taken based on these complaints.
As stated in the report, Kasthuri Shankar was captured in Hyderabad by a specialized unit from the Tamil Nadu police. This action was facilitated by the Cyberabad police, as the Egmore police, who had a transit warrant, were already present in Hyderabad to find her.
Kasthuri was detained not long after the Madras High Court declined her pre-arrest bail. The court determined that her words leaned towards inciting hate.
For those unaware, an actress made a contentious remark during an event in Tamil Nadu, suggesting that Telugu people originated from courtesans who served kings. This contentious comment led to several legal challenges against her across the state, including in Madurai and Chennai. As a result, officials swiftly responded to these complaints and served Kasthuri with legal notices.
Based on an account by Kerala Kaumudi, upon visiting Kasthuri’s home in Poes Garden for additional inquiries, the police found the residence locked. Furthermore, her phone seemed to be turned off, and there were signs suggesting that she might have vanished without a trace.
Previously, Kasthuri faced heavy criticism due to her offensive remarks. In response, she penned down, “Over the past two days, I have been subjected to numerous threats and assaults. These incidents have only strengthened my determination. Today, a highly esteemed Telugu individual took time to elucidate the impact of my word choice on the entire Telugu community in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
As a lifestyle expert, I want to clarify that my intention during the speech I delivered on November 3rd, 2024 was never to cause harm or disrespect towards my beloved Telugu extended family. If, unintentionally, any negative emotions were stirred, I deeply apologize for this oversight. In the spirit of fostering harmony among us all, I am withdrawing all references to Telugu from my speech, as I believe this matter has distracted from the crucial points I aimed to emphasize in that discourse.
