As a dedicated follower of true crime stories, I have been deeply intrigued by the Susan Powell case since it made headlines over a decade ago. The latest development in this tragic tale, with ABC 20/20 airing an episode on her disappearance, brings back memories of those chilling days when everyone held their breath, waiting for any news about Susan’s whereabouts.
The story of Susan Powell, a Utah mother who went missing and was never located, will be featured on the ABC 20/20 show “If Something Happens To Me.” At first, her disappearance seemed like a mystery, but events took a tragic turn. Her husband, Josh Powell, was under suspicion but wasn’t charged. Later in 2012, Josh took the lives of their two young sons in a murder-suicide. The episode is set to air on ABC 20/20 on July 26, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET.
From my gaming perspective, the last time I personally had contact with Susan Powell was on December 6, 2009. Later that night, around midnight, Josh Powell allegedly took our two sons for a camping trip, leaving me behind. When he came back home the next day, I was no longer there. Authorities conducted a search of our house just two days later and discovered traces of blood and suspicious items. Consequently, they labeled Josh as a person of interest in my disappearance case.
For several months, there was no sign of Susan, leading authorities to assume that she had passed away. During this time, Josh relocated from Utah to Washington to reside with his father. Unfortunately, he eventually lost custody of his sons. Their visits were closely monitored. In February 2012, during a supervised visit, Josh took the tragic lives of his sons and his own in a murder-suicide.

According to multiple reports, Susan Powell was never located by the authorities. At the beginning of the investigation into her disappearance, detectives discovered clues suggesting that her husband, Josh, may have been involved in her death. In the course of searching their home, law enforcement uncovered traces of blood, a large life insurance policy, and a letter in which Susan expressed concerns for her safety (as detailed by KUTV).
ABC News reported additionally that investigators interrogated Charlie Powell, then a 4-year-old boy, regarding the camping trip he went on with his father and brother. According to him, they had gone “camping” on the night when Susan Powell vanished. Nevertheless, Charlie stated that “my dad, my mom, and my little brother” were all present during the outing. He further mentioned that “my mom remained at Dinosaur National Park. My mom stayed where the crystals are.”
Furthermore, a letter discovered by detectives was kept in a safety deposit box. In this letter, Susan Powell expressed the deep unhappiness of her marriage. It came to light that she had been consulting a divorce lawyer due to marital issues when she went missing. The letter also contained an ominous message: “If I die, it might not be an accident.”
If I were to pass away, it might not have been an accident. In the investigation of Susan Powell’s disappearance, a significant clue was uncovered by the police. Don’t miss our “If Something Happens to Me…” episode on ABC this Friday at 9/8c or stream it on Hulu under S43, E4.

Although there was compelling proof implicating Josh Powell in the disappearance of his wife Susan, law enforcement did not press charges against him. Later in January 2010, Josh relocated with their children to reside at his father Steven Powell’s residence in Washington.
Based on the information provided, it appears that Steven engaged in two reprehensible activities: voyeurism and possession of child pornography. I find such behaviors to be utterly despicable and disturbing.
After his father was taken into custody, Josh Powell no longer had custody of their sons and could only visit them under supervision once a week. In early 2012, there were concerns about Josh’s psychological wellbeing, leading to an evaluation. He was scheduled for a polygraph test but tragically took his own life and that of his sons in a murder-suicide before this could take place.
On February 5, 2012, while under the supervision of someone else, Josh confined the supervisor outside. Subsequently, he rendered his sons unconscious with a hatchet, and later on, there was an enormous blast that engulfed everyone inside the house.
ABC 20/20’s program titled “If Something Happens To Me” will delve deeply into the mystery surrounding Susan Powell’s disappearance, which occurred on July 26.
