Based on KUTV’s report, the authorities carried out a search of Susan and Josh Powell’s Utah home about a week after Susan went missing on December 7, 2009. During this search, they discovered a insurance policy with a value exceeding $1 million, which was in Susan’s name. Additionally, there were signs of blood that appeared to have come from an unidentified male donor. A threatening letter written by Susan herself was also found, in which she expressed concerns about her potential demise, stating “If something happens to me, it may not be an accident.”
Additionally, Josh’s peculiar actions after Susan, who is now believed to be deceased having disappeared without a trace, raised suspicions. According to sources, he mentioned leaving the house late at night on the day she went missing for a camping trip with their sons. He reportedly returned the next day, discovering that she was no longer there.
According to ABC News, investigators spoke with Charlie Powell, the son of Susan and Josh Powell, who supported his father’s account of a camping trip. However, Charlie mentioned that it was “my dad, my mother, and my little brother” on the outing. Additionally, he claimed that “my mom” had stayed at Dinosaur National Park and “where the crystals are.”
Within just a few days, authorities labeled Josh as a significant suspect in the disappearance of his wife Susan Powell. Yet, no charges were ever filed against him. Following Susan’s vanishing act, Josh relocated to Washington together with their two sons, where he resided with his father. Eventually, Josh lost the right to have full custody of his boys, leaving him only allowed supervised visits. The investigation concluded in a heart-wrenching manner on February 5, 2012, when Josh Powell took both his and Susan’s lives through a murder-suicide.
According to reports, that day, Josh was scheduled to meet his sons during a monitored visit. But once the social worker arrived with the children at Powell’s residence, Josh barred the door, keeping the worker outside. In anger, Josh allegedly attacked the boys using a hatchet, leaving them critically injured. Subsequently, he poured gasoline around the house and ignited it, leading to a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of all three victims.
ABC 20/20’s “If Something Happens To Me” airs on July 26 with Susan and Josh Powell’s case.
