Aaron Taylor-Johnson opens up about his experience filming 28 Years Later with iPhones
I, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, shared my experience working with Danny Boyle on the third installment of his terrifying horror franchise, 28 Years Later. In an interview with Reuters at the film’s premiere, I discussed the incredible journey as an actor for this iconic British director and Boyle’s innovative approach to using iPhones in the movie.
In a chatty manner, the 35-year-old artist enthusiastically shared that making the movie was a captivating journey he referred to as an “intriguing” adventure. He went on to say, “Going to set each day brought about a thrilling and invigorating sensation since it was innovative.
In a interesting twist, Taylor-Johnson disclosed that Boyle decided to film the movie with “iPhones”. This choice, as the actor pointed out, added a unique quality and tactile feel to the footage, making it seem more authentic and engaging.
In a different wording, the unique filming style significantly amplified the suspenseful atmosphere of the horror film. However, director Taylor-Johnson found certain scenes to be unsettling due to the raw and intimate nature of using phone cameras.
Additionally, Boyle explained to Reuters his decision to use Apple’s leading smartphones for the production of his high-octane, post-apocalyptic movie. The esteemed 68-year-old filmmaker noted that modern phones now have the capability to record video in 4K quality.
127 Hours’ creator emphasized that despite minor challenges, mobile phones cameras are incredibly “lightweight.” This means one can easily travel to places with minimal impact and even construct custom setups using them. Additionally, he mentioned that these devices proved useful for capturing some of the “intense action” in the film.
28 Years Later by Boyle is set to hit cinemas on June 20th. Following its debut in London, it’s been lauded by critics. Variety’s Peter Debruge was particularly impressed by Boyle’s knack for delivering deep “insights” instead of just adrenaline-fueled entertainment intended for emotional release. Meanwhile, David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter noted that the sequel, 28 Years Later, cleverly defies expectations in numerous ways, offering an emotionally charged, raw, and immersive experience.
