A Thousand Blows creator Steven Knight shared updates on Season 2’s release date while discussing the show’s historical roots and direction. Knight also explored the real-life inspirations behind key moments in the series, adding depth to its historical setting.
Steven Knight says A Thousand Blows Season 2’s release date ‘won’t be long’
In a recent conversation with The Direct, Steven Knight, the mind behind A Thousand Blows, provided insights about Season 2 and its potential release as well as the show’s ongoing journey. Although they have confirmed that there will indeed be a second season, an exact launch date has yet to be revealed. When probed on whether the next installment might surface in 2025, Knight cautioned against speculation, assuring us that it wouldn’t be too far off.
The speaker explained that as long as the show remains successful, they plan to continue producing it. This is similar to how a train keeps running when it’s functioning properly. In this context, the “train” symbolizes the ongoing nature of the series itself. The actual content revolves around boxing, criminal underground, the East End, and class disparities within British society during the Empire era.
On its historical accuracy, Knight explained, “Whatever seems completely unbelievable and ridiculous is true. And whatever seems like, you know, oh, yeah, that would happen, is made up.”
He mentioned Hezekiah Moscow, a man who started as a lion tamer in London after traveling there, and later became a successful boxer. Notably, he was part of the 40 Elephants gang, led by Mary Carr. It’s hard to believe, but everything I just said is true.
He confirmed Alec’s death in the series reflects history, saying, “He was given, in England, [what] is known as an East End funeral… but Alec was killed in a knife fight in a workhouse when he was drunk.”
Knight discussed Sugar Goodson’s resistance to legitimized boxing, stating, “Sugar Goodson represents the old sort of East End working-class sensibility. At that time, that meant bare-knuckle boxing.”
He affirmed that Sugar indeed had a violent altercation with Treacle, stating, “It’s true. That fierce confrontation between the two brothers occurred inside a church. It was incredibly intense, and Treacle barely survived.
A Thousand Blows is available on Hulu.
