A romance between Kiana Cook and Kevin Atwater has been ruled out on Chicago PD...for now

As a long-time fan of Chicago PD, I must say that I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs in the lives of our beloved characters. The introduction of a new cast member always sparks curiosity, especially when it comes to potential romantic entanglements. In this case, Kiana Cook (Toya Turner) seems like an intriguing addition to the team, and I can’t help but wonder if she might strike a chord with one of our favorites – Kevin Atwater (LaRocque Hawkins).

Could Chicago PD’s new cop be sparking with Kevin Atwater? The showrunner has chimed in!

For Season 12, the series is gearing up with a fresh addition. The final episode of Season 11 saw Tracy Spirdakos bid farewell as Hailey Upton, moving on to a federal position. It has been previously revealed that Toya Turner will be introduced as Kiana Cook, a new recruit joining the Intelligence Unit.

Since Lisseth Chavez became part of the team during season 7, she’s been the first female team member we’ve had. That new police officer brought a fresh perspective to the team, and there were subtle signs suggesting a blossoming relationship with Kevin Atwater (played by LaRocque Hawkins).

Prior to any such event, the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly ended season 7, after which Chavez departed the series. In season 8, Rojas was absent without explanation, while Atwater has been shifting between different plotlines ever since.

Could it be possible for Kiana and Atwater to develop a relationship similar to Burgess and Ruzek, as some fans are speculating? Might they find a connection and nurture it into something romantic?

Why there may not be a romance for Atwater and Cook on Chicago PD just yet

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Gwen Sigan praised actress Cook, calling her “extremely cool,” “uniquely different,” and an “active-duty police officer.” Despite this, she mentioned that a romantic relationship between Cook’s character and Atwater wouldn’t be initiated right away.

1) Given that Kiana is new to the team, it’s likely she’ll find it difficult to adjust and feel accepted by her colleagues. Hank might also be cautious about some of his officers getting romantically involved because he understands how such relationships can create distractions, especially since he doesn’t want a repeat of Upton’s decline following her divorce from Jay Halstead.

However, Sigan hinted Atwater may get a romance after all:

Atwater might get a little romance this season, somebody who can see him and can understand who he is.

It’d be heartwarming if Atwater found love again, as his last romantic encounter was in season 9 with Celeste, a passionate activist for social justice. Unfortunately, their connection was cut short when Atwater didn’t disclose his occupation in time, and Celeste harbored strong resentment towards the police.

In summary, it’s beneficial for Atwater to have found a new love interest. It could be advantageous for him to explore relationships beyond the CPD, although there are suggestions that he might find someone similar. Regardless, seeing Atwater in a different context is positive and may contribute to an exciting new season of Chicago PD.

Chicago PD season 12 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on NBC.
