A Minecraft Movie: Rob McElhenney, D&D Directors, & 19 Writers Went Uncredited

The script for A Minecraft Movie was written by 28 different people.

As a hardcore Minecraft fan, I’m pumped to share that I’ve just found out that a live-action movie based on everyone’s favorite block-building game is now playing in theaters across the United States! This epic adventure, inspired by the 2011 video game sensation from Mojang Studios, has been directed by Jared Hess and features an all-star cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. Can’t wait to catch it on the big screen!

The screenplay for “A Minecraft Movie” is attributed to five authors: Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta. The original story, however, was created by Allison Schroeder in collaboration with Bowman and Palmer.

According to World of Reel’s findings, the WGA website unveils that 22 more individuals contributed to the script, among them being Rob McElhenney from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Who worked on the script for A Minecraft Movie?

Apart from McElhenney, Goldstein, and Daley, other writers whose contributions to the script were acknowledged in WGA’s “Additional Literary Material” section are Megan Amram, Kevin Biegel, Dana Fox, Hannah Friedman, Jason Fuchs, Hess (whose full name isn’t specified), Phil Augusta Jackson, Lauryn Kahn, Kieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Zak Penn, Simon Rich, Peter Sollett, Laura Steinel, Jon Spaihts, Oren Uziel, and Ben Wexler. These individuals worked on the script but didn’t initially receive credit.

It’s important to mention that Warner Bros. has been working on a Minecraft film for over a decade, with various screenwriters and directors (including McElhenney) involved at some point before they eventually left the project. Now, this movie is anticipated as one of the biggest box office hits in 2025, having already earned approximately $323.4 million.

Step into the Minecraft universe, where creativity isn’t just a handy tool, it’s vital for survival! A group of unconventional individuals – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks) – are thrust into extraordinary circumstances when they’re transported through a mystical gateway into the Overworld: an imaginative, pixelated landscape. To return home, they must learn to navigate this world, defend it from threats like Piglins and Zombies, and complete a magical journey guided by a skilled craftsman named Steve (Black). Their adventure will test their courage and encourage them to rediscover the qualities that make each of them unique – their creativity – skills they’ll need to succeed in reality.
