As a die-hard Minecraft enthusiast, I’ve been absolutely thrilled to witness the incredible response to the long-awaited Minecraft Movie. The buzz surrounding its record-breaking debut and staggering audience turnout has been the talk of the town in the film industry. This blockbuster hit soared straight to the top of the box office, shattering expectations and outperforming previous video game adaptations. Its triumph couldn’t have come at a better time, offering a much-needed boost amid a sluggish 2025 box office and ongoing uncertainties for cinemas.
A Minecraft Movie’s box office opening creates videogame movie record
Over the weekend, the highly-anticipated collaboration between Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s Minecraft film raked in an impressive $157 million domestically. This remarkable opening shattered the previous record for the biggest domestic debut of a movie based on a video game, which was held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $146.3 million. On a global scale, the Minecraft film grossed an astonishing $301 million from 75 markets worldwide. Its opening weekend abroad was particularly strong, earning $144 million. (Source: Deadline)
The movie raked in a record-breaking $60 million on its first Saturday, making it Warner Bros.’ highest single-day Saturday gross (unadjusted for inflation). Previously, the best preview performance for a video game film was surpassed with earnings of $10.55 million. Approximately one-third of weekend ticket sales came from IMAX and premium large formats, while 3D screenings accounted for 15% of the total.
Under the guidance of director Jared Hess, an upcoming movie titled “A Minecraft Movie” boasts a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. This family-friendly film (rated PG) transports four characters into a three-dimensional pixelated universe. With an estimated budget of $150 million, the production team is confident about its quality. Executives from Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, expressed their excitement saying, “We’re thrilled to see that A Minecraft Movie has been warmly welcomed by audiences worldwide.
According to PostTrak, around 43% of moviegoers were aged 18-24, with another 35% being between 13-17. Younger kids (under 12) gave the film a perfect 5-star rating. The overall CinemaScore was a B+, and Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score came in at 87%. Males under 25 accounted for approximately 54% of the audience, who collectively graded it at 78%. About one-third (31%) of ticket purchasers identified as Latino or Hispanic.
The marketing strategy incorporated digital advertisements and a partnership with McDonald’s Happy Meal. Moreover, the movie broke box office records by earning $14.6 million on its opening weekend in China, which was a remarkable achievement. Jeff Goldstein, an executive from Warner Bros., commented that it was “a perfect storm” of success. (via The Hollywood Reporter)
The final box office numbers are expected on Monday.
