As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for mystery games and a soft spot for intriguing narratives, I must say that A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder has already hooked me from the very first episode. The suspense, the twists, and the characters’ complexities have all come together in a delightful blend that keeps me on the edge of my seat.
As a passionate gamer and bookworm, I couldn’t help but get excited when Netflix globally dropped “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” on August 1, 2024 – a series adapted from Holly Jackson’s intriguing book series of the same name. Being a UK resident, I was fortunate enough to catch the premiere a month earlier on BBC iPlayer on July 1. This gripping mystery has kept me on the edge of my seat ever since!
The opening scene showcases Emma Myers’ character, Pippa Fitz-Amobi, pondering her summer assignment for her school project, often referred to as Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in the series. While not universally recognized by American audiences, it serves as an additional qualification for students to attain.
Pippa is undecided about her EPQ project, but after seeing graffiti on the Singh family’s house, she finds inspiration. Instead of choosing a casual topic for her research, Pippa decides to investigate the case of Sal Singh (Rahul Pattni), who was falsely accused of killing his girlfriend, Andie Bell (India Lilli Davies). She wants to clear Sal’s name and uncover the truth behind his death.
In this police narrative, Pippa prepares the scene and unveils the enigma she’s about to untangle. Sal is suspected of murdering Andie following a night spent at Max Hasting’s (Henry Ashton) residence. The events unfolded after midnight, with Sal found dead in a forest after swallowing an unknown number of pills. A confession note implicates him in Andie’s disappearance and eventual demise.
The investigation into Pip’s case kicks off by interviewing those who were with Sal on the night he is accused of killing Andie. This group includes Naomi Ward, the sister of Pip’s best friend Cara and Max Hastings. Pip attempts to speak with Sal’s brother Ravi in the season premiere, but he requests that she refrain from getting involved.
Initially, Pip talks to Naomi, yet she fails to complete the interview due to her father, Elliot Ward (Mathew Baynton), arriving home from his tutoring sessions early. Just as he enters their house, Naomi discloses that Sal actually had a valid excuse, but Pip is unable to pursue this revelation further.
At a later event, I found myself working as a caterer alongside Pip and Cara, celebrating Max’s parents’ anniversary. Curiosity piqued, I decided to privately grill Max about the controversial night in question. Intriguingly, his responses seemed to contradict one another. To keep things fair, he proposed a quid pro quo – I would take a shot for each question I asked, and he’d answer honestly.
After the job interview, tipsy Pip carelessly reveals to Cara that there might be untruths surrounding Naomi’s account about that specific night. This infuriates Cara, as she had requested Pip to exclude Naomi from the story due to her recent struggles, only for Pip to conduct the interview with Naomi without informing Cara first.
Five years ago, a memory resurfaces for Pip. It was a time when Sal was searching for Andie at their school. Andie had just walked by in the corridor, signaling that she didn’t want to be found by Sal. Somehow, it appears that Pip feels accountable for the situation involving Andie and Sal.
After the gathering, she drops by Ravi and Sal’s residence and requests to have a chat with Ravi upon being responded to by his mother. Inquisitive, Ravi queries why she suspects Sal wasn’t involved, to which she replies that she felt a bond with Sal due to his kindness towards her. She was convinced he wouldn’t take another life.
Ravi gives her a bone, and he shows her the messages Sal sent right before his death. In those texts, Sal admitted something, yet the language was grammatically correct. Despite having excellent grades, Sal’s texting style was perceived as being uneducated by Ravi.
They agree that Sal didn’t do it.
In the future, Pip examines Sal’s messages alongside Andie. It seemed like there was some kind of situation between the two, though Pip remains unaware of its details.
In a brief moment, Sal and Andie share a kiss under the rainfall, having reconciled and apologized. The scene concludes, leaving us with Pip, who stands transfixed before an abundance of evidence she’s gathered over a short span of time. Quite a load!
