As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through alternate realities and parallel universes in my favorite games, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of a crossover between the U.K. and CBS versions of Ghosts.
Is it possible that we might witness a blend of stories from both the UK and CBS versions of the show, featuring ghostly encounters? The showrunner has expressed thoughts on this potential crossover event!
In a surprising turn of events, the American adaptation of a British series about ghosts has proven to be equally successful as its original counterpart. Both shows share the same narrative where a couple shifts into a mansion, and following an incident, the wife gains the ability to perceive and communicate with the spirits of deceased residents who once inhabited the estate. The humor lies in her attempts to assist these ghosts with their earthly problems and navigating contemporary society.
As a gamer immersed in both versions of this intriguing series, it’s evident that each adapts its narrative to reflect their unique cultural backgrounds and historical events. The British edition introduces characters like Regency-era poet Thomas and a World War II Captain, figures who are absent from the American version. Yet, there are striking similarities between them; for instance, a scout who meets a tragic end after being shot with an arrow, and a character who dies inexplicably without pants – in one version, he’s a disgraced British politician and in another, a Wall Street trader.
Both shows have been fantastic, and the CBS show in particular has become a massive success by delving deeper into the concept with an influx of new ghosts. This development has sparked the intriguing question of whether or not these shows could potentially merge for a crossover event, bridging their respective worlds together. Is such a scenario possible?
More actors from Ghosts UK may come to the CBS adaptation
The program has experienced a slight intersection of characters previously, with Matthew Baynton, who portrayed poet Thomas, appearing as an overly dramatic actor in a documentary drama staged within the house, on its American adaptation.
The suggestion seems to imply that they might consider having British actors reprise their roles but in fresh characters, as a way to honor the original series while adding a playful touch. Yet, it doesn’t appear a comprehensive crossover is being planned at this time.
In an interview with TVLine, one of the co-creators of “Ghosts,” Joe Port, expressed his desire for the original cast members to make appearances. However, he noted that a complete crossover might be challenging due to the shows’ significant similarities.
At some point, we’d like to have them all on, eventually. But as far as [Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe] as Alison and Mike, that sort of doesn’t compute for us because it feels kind of strange… It just seems too similar, or something, to Sam and Jay. Like, they live in a house where there’s also a pants-less ghost and a guy with an arrow through his neck….
In another perspective, it might prove quite amusing to have Alison and Mike encounter a duo facing similar supernatural troubles, allowing for some humor derived from contrasting cultural backgrounds. Yet, despite these differences, there’s an underlying unity as both pairs delight in discovering fellow spirit-sharers (in more ways than one).
In other words, while having two mansions full of ghosts in a single show could create an exciting crossover, the similarities between them make it challenging to accept and might seem like too much of a gimmick. The creators are hesitant to pursue this idea only for increased ratings, even though CBS may find it appealing.
Although it’s exciting to envision some cast members from the U.K.’s Ghosts appearing in the American adaptation, a complete cross-over between the series seems improbable. However, this demonstrates the shared appeal that has made both versions of the comedy such a massive success.
Ghosts season 4 premieres Thursday, Oct. 17 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
