According to recent updates from Variety, it appears that a follow-up series to “A Different World” has now received a pilot production order from Netflix – an uncommon step for their streaming platform.
What do we know about the A Different World sequel series?
Based on Variety’s report, the streaming service intends to film a pilot episode for the project during summer. This step aims to evaluate the show’s overall feel and assess the compatibility between potential cast members. Interestingly, this is a relatively uncommon move by Netflix, as they have only infrequently issued pilot orders for comedy series in the past.
The report further notes that contrary to the initial command, Netflix does not intend to participate in the traditional “pilot competition” period commonly seen among cable networks, where programs vie for a television slot.
At this point, no formal announcements have been made regarding the cast or details about the project. However, rumors about a sequel series have been circulating for some time now. It is said that the storyline might focus on the daughter of Whitley Gilbert (previously played by Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), characters from the original series.
Similarly, it’s worth mentioning that the college where their daughter will study is none other than Hillman College, which was a central element in the original series.
A Different World first appeared on television screens in 1987, and was initially developed as a spin-off from the hugely successful sitcom The Cosby Show. Originally starring Lisa Bonet reprising her role as Denise Huxtable, the series chronicled her college life at Hillman.
Initially, Bonet departed from the show following the first season, causing the plot to shift towards the developing relationship between Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Along with Guy and Hardison, other main characters in the series were portrayed by Marisa Tomei, Dwann Lewis, Mary Alice, Loretta Devine, Daryl M. Bell, and Sinbad.
