A Beginner's Guide to Escape from Tarkov

As a gamer diving into the intense world of Tarkov, let me tell you, surviving here is no walk in the park, let alone flourishing. Whether you’re new or back after a hiatus, I’ve got some strategies, tactics, and wisdom to guide you towards victory. Here are my tips for mastering Battlestate Games’ challenging extraction shooter!

Take it slow

Mastering Escape from Tarkov requires patience as it takes quite some time to become proficient or even good at it. Many beginners may attempt early missions repeatedly, feel discouraged, and eventually give up. Keep in mind that you won’t make rapid progress, but tasks can help expedite your advancement. Instead of focusing solely on tasks, concentrate on expanding your inventory (stash) and improving your hideout, then tackle the tasks as secondary objectives.

During raids, novice players often grab a valuable item or mission objective and then rush to leave the area. However, taking your time to explore can help you encounter other players. Plus, searching for loot such as crates, bodies, or cabinets offers experience points, meaning even if you don’t survive, you’re still making progress in the game.

Learn the maps

To master playing Tarkov effectively, it’s advisable to start by familiarizing yourself with just one or two maps initially. There’s a wealth of helpful resources available online that you can keep handy on your desktop or a secondary screen while you play. Familiarize yourself with entry points, exits, and high-loot areas on the map. However, mastering landmark recognition is crucial. Recognizing landmarks will help you instantly know your location upon spawning, which in turn influences your movement strategy across the map. Once you’ve learned all the possible spawn points, you can make educated guesses about other players’ locations and their movement patterns, especially when you hear gunfire nearby.

If you’re looking for a map exploration experience under PVP conditions, Scav runs could be an option for you. In these runs, you’ll spawn into an ongoing raid as a Scav, and primarily have to worry about Player Character Models (PMCs). Since most of the valuable loot would likely have been taken by this point, you won’t gain any EXP, but it’s an excellent method for earning some in-game currency without putting your equipment at risk.

You can always run

In the game Escape from Tarkov, skirmishes can be incredibly swift, with just a single well-placed shot ending the game for you. Therefore, if you’re engaged in combat with another player, it’s perfectly acceptable to retreat. However, this necessitates choosing strategic locations and positions that provide multiple escape options. The time it typically takes your opponent to realize you’ve fled is often sufficient to establish some space and barriers between you both.

Play Aggressively

Catching an opponent off guard significantly increases the likelihood of victory. Attacking swiftly, before they can anticipate your move, often results in eliminating opponents. Much of this tactical advantage relies on one’s experience, but most players tend to falter under even minimal stress.

If you’re pinned down, there’s typically enough time between emerging from cover and taking aim for an enemy to shoot you in the head. Unless they’re resorting to grenades as a tactic, it’s usually safer to stay put and let them approach you. Keep in mind that an unusual position can give you an advantage. Seek high ground by using shelves, beds, or other elevated spots.

Find Someone to Play With

As a gamer, I’ve found that having a crew to play Escape from Tarkov with on a regular basis makes the game so much smoother. Taking down quests, looting, or causing chaos together is just way more fun! If you don’t have anyone to team up with, the official Escape from Tarkov Discord server is an excellent place to start your search. You’ll find lots of seasoned players ready and willing to guide newbies like me, and there’s always someone eager to tag along on a quest.
