John Cena’s character, Peacemaker, has had plenty of battles against formidable DC Universe creatures, including Starro and the Butterflies. In the second season of his HBO Max series, he’s set to encounter what could very well be the most terrifying creature he’s faced so far.
What do we know about Peacemaker Season 2?
Below, you’ll find an image featuring DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn taking a detailed shot of a monstrous figure dressed in black rubber, sporting four fiery red eyes, long talons, and a design that seems to echo the Xenomorph from the Alien series. This creature is seen cuddling a small, hairless critter, resembling a rat. It’s yet unknown what part this monster might play in Peacemaker Season 2 as of now.

In a span of three years, the next chapter of “Peacemaker” is due, following its initial installment that was part of the closed DC Extended Universe. Although “Peacemaker” has transitioned from DCEU to DCU, most events in Season 1 will remain relevant within canon. To clarify what alterations have occurred between these universes, director James Gunn plans to discuss changes through his newly launched Peacemaker Podcast.
In their initial podcast discussion, Peter Safran and Gunn clarified one of the most frequently asked questions since they took charge of DC: “What exactly constitutes the DC Universe? To put it simply, this is where Superman resides, this is the domain of Creature Commandos, and up until now, these are the only elements that have been confirmed as 100% canonical.
In another development, occurrences from the DCEU might be acknowledged as part of the DCU’s official storyline through character mentions or references. As for Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn confirms that it is firmly set within the DC universe, but minor adjustments were made in Season 1 to align with DC canon.
The actions portrayed in John Wick’s 2021 DCEU film, “The Suicide Squad,” will be considered part of the DC Universe (DCU) narrative through a future plotline in Season 2 of “Peacemaker.” This storyline will feature Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr., seeking justice or vengeance against Peacemaker, as he was responsible for killing Rick Flag Jr., a character from the superhero movie.
In the second season of Peacemaker, we’ll see some familiar DCEU/DCU faces returning, such as Isabela Merced portraying Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Sean Gunn in the role of Maxwell Lord, Freddie Stroma taking on the Vigilante character, Danielle Brooks playing Leota Adebayo, Steve Agee as John Economos, Jennifer Holland reprising Emilia Harcourt, and Nhut Le as Judomaster. Several others are also expected to join them.
Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
