Peacemaker’s Funniest Scene Isn’t Canon to the DCU

James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, has disclosed that a particular scene from the first episode of Peacemaker‘s initial season won’t be part of the continuity in the DC Universe. The John Cena-led series within the DC Universe is set to return on HBO Max for its eagerly anticipated second season starting August 21.

In a new twist, Peacemaker was developed, scripted, and supervised by Gunn, who takes on the role of its executive producer. Season 2 is set to bring back stars like Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. Additionally, we’ll see some fresh faces this season, including Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.

Which Peacemaker Season 1 scene isn’t canon to the DCU?

In the first installment of the Peacemaker Podcast, Gunn disclosed some fresh backstage anecdotes and intriguing tidbits about Peacemaker Season 1 Episode 1. Among these revelations was a clarification that one specific scene from the episode might have been altered due to the DCU (DC Universe).

When inquired about the amusing opening scene from the first episode involving Cena’s Peacemaker debating with a hospital staff member over Aquaman, Gunn clarified that viewers should overlook this scene as Aquaman won’t be a well-known superhero within the present timeline of his DC Universe.

One common point of confusion when Peter Safran and I took charge of DC was understanding what exactly belongs to the DC Universe (DCU). So far, only Superman’s world and the world where Creature Commandos exist are fully established as canon. The same will hold true for Peacemaker Season 2 – it is completely canon within the DC universe, but we had to make some adjustments from Season 1.

Is Aquaman considered part of the official DC Universe (DCU)? It’s uncertain. However, it seems to me that Aquaman might not be a part of it, given that Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled, and Aquaman isn’t as well-known as heroes like Superman in the DCU. Nevertheless, I believe everything presented in this episode is likely canon.
