Stephen King’s works continue to captivate the entertainment industry. Recently, The Monkey movie was released and proved to be a box office success, garnering an impressive 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, director JT Mollner is set to bring another one of King’s cherished stories to life through adaptation.
This year, various adaptations of Stephen King’s works are hitting both the big and small screens. In movie theaters, Francis Lawrence, director from the Hunger Games series, is helming “The Long Walk,” a film about teenagers participating in a deadly marathon. Additionally, “The Running Man” is getting another adaptation, with Glen Powell taking on the lead role, battling ruthless Hunters for cash rewards.
Stephen King’s stories are also moving onto TV screens. Starting in October, HBO’s series “It: Welcome to Derry” revisits the events that led to the first film. Meanwhile, MGM+ is streaming “The Institute,” where dark mysteries unravel at a children’s talent institution. Additionally, a new adaptation of “Carrie” (previously adapted twice) is being developed and will be available on Amazon Prime Video as a miniseries.
Which Stephen King book is next to be adapted by JT Mollner?
As stated in a recent announcement from Lionsgate, it’s been revealed that JT Mollner will be responsible for adapting Stephen King’s novel “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.” Previously, he has worked on adapting the script for another Stephen King work, titled “The Long Walk.
In particular, it was JT Mollner who penned and orchestrated the independent psychological thriller titled Strange Darling, which is set for release in 2024. This indie production revolving around a one-night stand transforming into a game of cat-and-mouse has garnered an impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at present.
Roy Lee, who has previously produced works such as “The Long Walk” and “Strange Darling”, is set to collaborate again with JT Mollner on an upcoming horror movie. Known for his involvement in several Stephen King adaptations like the It films, Doctor Sleep, and Salem’s Lot, Lee certainly has a knack for bringing chilling tales to life on the big screen.
Stephen King’s novel, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, follows the harrowing tale of a nine-year-old girl named Trisha, who finds herself lost in the forest and must rely on her wits to survive without help. Her lifeline becomes the baseball games she listens to on her Walkman featuring player Tom Gordon, which eventually cause her to experience vivid hallucinations.
In a recent press statement, Lionsgate’s President, Erin Westerman, outlined her reasoning behind choosing JT Mollner to direct the upcoming Stephen King adaptation.
According to Westerman, we think filmmaker JT has a promising future ahead. His characters, particularly those portraying young individuals, are remarkably captivating, heart-wrenching, and emotional – much like the ones Stephen King writes in his books. The tale of survival and resilience in ‘The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon’ is evergreen, and we’ve cherished this narrative for a long time. JT seems to be an ideal fit to transform and direct this beloved adaptation of a Stephen King story.
Before we learn when The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon will be released, consider catching The Long Walk at the cinema on September 12th instead.
