After a wait of seven long years, 2018’s Batman Ninja is now available in stunning 4K quality. The visually striking anime adaptation of Batman certainly shines in Ultra High Definition. However, the recent release does come with one significant drawback that might irk some fans. Despite this setback, it doesn’t detract from the overall excellent job done on the production.
The story kicks off in Gotham City where Gorilla Grodd’s time-travel device malfunctions, causing a host of ruthless villains like Lord Joker to be transported back to medieval Japan. The cruelest among them is Lord Joker, who aims to rule the feudal states and eradicate Batman once and for all. With his technology losing its edge, can Batman regain the upper hand to prevent Lord Joker and the others from altering history?

In my opinion, I find the sequel more appealing than the first one, but Batman Ninja offers plenty to appreciate. The film’s main asset has consistently been its unique visual aesthetic, with Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki designing the characters for this movie and adding an entertaining twist to many well-known figures. This results in a visually stunning production, and the colors stand out even more vividly in the 4K version, which offers Dolby Vision compatibility.
In the case of Batman Ninja’s 4K version, it’s an enjoyable viewing experience overall. However, there’s a significant problem with the latest release: only one subtitle track is provided. Typically, this wouldn’t be much of an issue; however, the Japanese version of the movie features a dramatically different script (approximately 90% of the dialogue differs from the English version). Consequently, watching the film with the original Japanese audio and reading the English subtitles results in a less than ideal experience. The previous Blu-ray release offered separate subtitle tracks, making it unfortunate that this essential feature was overlooked for what should have been the ultimate edition of the movie.
In the transition to the 4K release, all bonus features from the Blu-ray version have been carried over. This includes approximately 30 minutes of captivating documentaries, one delving into the process of reimagining Batman in an Eastern context, and another providing a behind-the-scenes look at production. Additionally, you’ll find a lengthy (nearly 50 minutes) panel discussion from New York Comic Con, skillfully moderated by Gary Miereanu, that promises to be both informative and entertaining.
Batman Ninja 4K Review: Final Verdict
Experience the stunning 4K presentation of the anime movie Batman Ninja, ideal for viewers who prefer the English dub and crave top-tier quality. Regrettably, enthusiasts of the Japanese dub may find it less satisfying due to the absence of a specific subtitle track tailored to the unique aspects of this film. Thus, it is highly recommended with an essential disclaimer.
