Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael Jackson biopic gets April 2026 release date

Lionsgate and Universal Pictures’ film “Michael” will open in theaters on Friday, April 24, 2025, as announced by Deadline. The release has been postponed due to several reasons, one of which is the movie’s extended length, estimated to be over three and a half hours. Additionally, reports suggest that initial cuts of the film may have contained allusions to Jordan Chandler.

Significantly, in 1993, Evan Chandler, father of Jordan Chandler, leveled accusations against Michael Jackson, claiming that the singer had sexually abused his son, who was then 13 years old. These claims sparked criminal investigations into Jackson and a subsequent civil lawsuit, which was ultimately resolved outside of court. (Source: ABC News)

Michael’s screenplay, originally penned by John Logan, who also wrote the script for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000), was approved by the estate of its namesake. The production for this movie commenced, and it was initially reported to include Jordan as a character. However, during the project, it was found that an agreement had previously been made not to feature Jordan in the film. Consequently, the creators needed to revise the content.

Antoine Fuqua serves as the director for the movie titled Michael. Notably, he was also the one behind the 2001 crime thriller, Training Day. The ensemble cast features Jaafar Jackson portraying Michael Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca, and Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe. It is important to note that Jaafar Jackson is the nephew of Michael Jackson, being the son of his older brother Jermaine.

For Michael, the logline is: “A deep exploration of Michael Jackson, a complex individual who ascended to the title ‘King of Pop.’ This biopic aims to recreate his most legendary performances while offering a revealing look into the artist’s creative journey and personal experiences.

Michael is reportedly the only major studio release that week in the U.S. so far.
