Rene Kirby passes away at 70, claims report
Rene Kirby, famously recognized for portraying Walt in Shallow Hal, passed away on July 11, 2025, at the ripe age of 70, in Burlington, Vermont.
It was Seven Days, a local news outlet from Vermont, that was informed about the passing of Jon Kirby by his brother. Jon spent two months at the University of Vermont Medical Center battling complications related to his kidneys, bladder, esophagus, and multiple infections. Tragically, he had previously overcome throat cancer, but eventually lost his voice following surgery to remove his larynx.
Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont, Kirby lived with spina bifida, an ailment causing scoliosis, limited leg mobility, and walking difficulties. Yet, he achieved state championships in gymnastics, swimming, and skiing. For two decades, he was associated with IBM and continued to be a well-known figure in Burlington, frequently seen cycling on his tricycle until late 2024.
In the year 1999, while filming Me, Myself and Irene, director Peter Farrelly encountered Kirby in Burlington. He told the Burlington Free Press in 2023 that “Kirby is a man we actually met during our travels, in Burlington. He’s not the type of person you usually find in movies. You might spot him around Burlington, but not on screen.” Later, Farrelly cast Kirby for Shallow Hal (2001), where he worked alongside Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow. Subsequently, Kirby played Phil Rupp in Stuck on You (2003) and made an appearance in a 2005 episode of HBO’s Carnivàle.
In simple terms, Jon Kirby expressed to Seven Days, “He demonstrated to me that there are no boundaries to what one can achieve.” He further emphasized, “You don’t need to physically stand tall to make yourself notable.
Kirby is survived by his mother and six siblings. He was predeceased by his father.
