DCU’s James Gunn Explains Recent Black Adam & Shazam! 2 Comment

James Gunn has explained the context behind his recent statements about Black Adam and Shazam! 2.

In December 2024, Gunn and Peter Safran debuted the DC Universe (DCU) at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, starting with an animated Creature Commandos series. Following this, Gunn’s Superman film was released, while Peacemaker Season 2 is set to premiere soon. By the end of 2024, we can expect to see shows featuring Lanterns, Clayface, and Supergirl.

Prior to the DCU, Warner Bros. was responsible for the DCEU – a connected universe that started in 2013 with Man of Steel and concluded in 2023 with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Gunn was involved in various DCEU productions, including The Suicide Squad from 2021 and Season 1 of Peacemaker.

What did James Gunn say about Black Adam and Shazam! 2?

In a chat with Den of Geek, Gunn clarified that Black Adam and Shazam! 2 (Shazam! Fury of the Gods) don’t fall under the umbrella of the DC Universe, despite featuring characters from the Peacemaker series.

This way, we maintain a natural flow while conveying the information accurately and clearly.

He commented, “They’re not canon! I hate it!”

Actually, some misunderstood his statement as implying Gunn disliked both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but in reality, that’s not what he was expressing.

On Threads, he made it clear, “It’s important to be cautious about such statements in these posts. Contrary to what might be suggested, I didn’t express hatred for those films. Instead, I criticized the portrayal of the 11th Street Kids, and I have doubts about Harcourt’s role as the warden of an underwater prison, as well as Waller’s connection with the Justice Society.

It’s yet unclear how Peacemaker Season 2 tackles the shift in DCEU/DCU continuity; however, there’s no cause for concern since Gunn has repeatedly stated that this aspect will be properly addressed.

On August 21, 2025, the second season of “Peacemaker” will debut on HBO Max. At present, you can catch up on the first season, as well as “Black Adam” and “Shazam! 2,” which are already streaming on this platform.
