Star Trek 4: Sci-F Sequel Gets Optimistic Update From Former Director

Matt Shakman initially planned to lead the production of Star Trek 4, a film by Paramount Pictures that has been stalled in development since 2015. But due to various creative obstacles, Shakman eventually chose to part ways with the project and instead direct Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

What did Matt Shakman say about Star Trek 4?

In a recent chat with Variety, Shakman chose not to reveal details about the abandoned storyline for Star Trek 4 at this time. He remains optimistic that the studio will produce the fourth installment in the franchise at some point in the future.

He expressed that the fundamental concept seems unchanged, and he truly hopes they’ll have an opportunity to produce that film,” he stated.

Besides that, back in 2022 when I decided to part ways with Star Trek 4, I couldn’t help but share some insights about the pre-production phase. As a gamer immersed in this interstellar journey, I was thrilled to confirm that we were on the brink of launching its production. We had our stages set, our crew assembled, and were ready to roll. But then, unexpectedly, everything took a drastic turn for the worst. The project underwent such a significant transformation that we were forced to release our dedicated crew and dismantle the sets we’d painstakingly built.

In March of 2024, Steve Yockey (known for The Flight Attendant) was brought on board to write a new script. Since Shakman’s departure, no director has been appointed yet for this project. It’s now been three years since producer J.J. Abrams first mentioned that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg would be returning to their roles from the 2009, 2013, and 2016 Star Trek films. However, it’s uncertain if they are still committed to appear in the upcoming fourth film.
