Back To The Roots: Daedalic Entertainment Is Finally Making Point-and-Click Adventures Again

Oh, Daedalic Entertainment! Their captivating games significantly influenced my adolescence, introducing me to an unexpected genre – interactive storytelling through point-and-click mechanics. And it seems I wasn’t the only one captivated… until a series of unfortunate events.

From Edna to Deponia: The Rise and Fall of a Genre Giant

Established in 2007, Daedalic Entertainment swiftly gained recognition for its exceptional point-and-click adventures such as Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, The Whispered World, and Deponia. By the early 2010s, the studio was recognized as one of the most impactful in the German-speaking gaming community. However, from approximately 2016 onwards, the company faced tough times due to escalating production costs and disappointing sales. Their endeavor to branch out from the adventure genre and aim for larger success resulted in the infamous failure of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a half-completed, emotionless game that was panned by critics and players alike. Shortly after this debacle, Daedalic announced they would be discontinuing their development division and focusing solely on publishing instead.

To be truthful, it seems like a wise decision indeed – as Daedalic Entertainment is partnering with Cologne’s Three Headed Monkey studio to release a new point-and-click adventure that appears to be a fitting return to their roots: peculiar characters, clever dialogues, and an enchanting game environment. Titled “Ghost Haunting“, this game showcases endearing 2D pixel art and evokes the classic adventure feelings, making it irresistible for long-time genre enthusiasts.

Comeback with a Pumpkin Demon: Ghost Haunting Brings Back the Magic

she wishes to summon her deceased grandmother back from the afterlife. If ghosts can enter our world, she reasons, then it should work in reverse too… or so she thinks. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and her actions cause an imbalance between the worlds. Whoops!

It seems a trailer and an early game preview have already been released, with Gronkh being among the first to check out the game. A launch date hasn’t been announced yet, but you can add Ghost Haunting to your wishlist on Steam. Additionally, it appears that another Deponia game is in development. Released information indicates a potential launch this year for Surviving Deponia, which was initially announced back in 2023. However, there has been no further news since then, so we’ll have to wait and see if Daedalic Entertainment has any more surprises up their sleeve.
