Why Superman’s Darker Opening Scene With Krypto Was Deleted

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit I came across about the visual effects for the DC Universe film, Superman. Matthew Eberle, who led the on-set team, revealed details of a gripping scene that unfortunately didn’t make it to the big screen. This omitted scene involved David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman and Krypto, his canine companion.

Superman’s cut opening scene had Krypto battling abominable snowmen

In a social media post, Eberle disclosed an abandoned opening scene concept for Superman where a heap of slain abominable snowmen were present, but it didn’t make it to the final edit. Here’s what he wrote: “Initially… as Krypto drags Superman, they come across numerous dead abominable snowmen… Superman tells Krypto, ‘You need to stop killing abominable snowmen’… It ended up on the cutting room floor. I was there,” accompanied by a behind-the-scenes photo that appeared to be taken on set. (Source: ComicBook)

It appears that the artist’s recent post sheds light on a riddle surrounding promotional items released prior to Superman’s debut. Back in May, several news outlets and social media platforms shared stories about a Superman toy suggesting the presence of a Fortress of Solitude creature. This figure seemed to have white fur and sharp teeth. With this latest disclosure, it can be reasonably assumed that the creature was intended to represent an abominable snowman.

It’s worth mentioning that there were other Krypto scenes cut from the film, one of which involved Ultraman striking Krypto. According to Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), this scene didn’t sit well with the test audience and was removed during editing. Maria Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica / the Engineer) expressed her disapproval, stating, “It’s not right to hit a dog.” However, she clarified that her character didn’t actually punch Krypto; instead, it was portrayed as the dog attacking her first.

Moreover, a scene featuring Krypto alongside Edi Gathegi’s character, Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, was unfortunately not included in the final production.

Superman is playing in theaters now.
