Captain Planet: Live-Action Remake Finds New Home, Gets Exciting Update

The live-action Captain Planet remake is moving forward, though not as initially planned.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share some insights about a fascinating animated series that left a lasting impact on me – Captain Planet and the Planeteers. This captivating television production was brought to life by the creative minds of Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner back in September 1990. Over six thrilling seasons, this show held my attention!

Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, had been aiming to bring the animated series Captain Planet to life as a live-action film. This project was intended for Paramount Pictures and was being jointly written by Glen Powell and Jono Matt.

By the set deadline, Captain Planet’s rights were returned to Warner Bros. Discovery; however, Powell continued to harbor a strong interest in it as his fame soared rapidly following Top Gun: Maverick.

What is happening with the live-action Captain Planet remake?

Instead of becoming a theatrical feature film, the reimagined version of Captain Planet and the Planeteers is now being developed as a live-action television series for streaming on Netflix.

The series hails from Greg Berlanti’s production house Berlanti Productions, Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television. Tara Hernandez is responsible for the scriptwriting, while DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman take on the role of executive producers.

Powell is no longer involved with the project; however, Matt still serves as a producer.

According to Deadline’s article, “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” is a show about five teenagers who team up with a superhero named Captain Planet to solve environmental crises. The series was created by DIC Enterprises (for seasons 1-3) and Hanna-Barbera Cartoons (for seasons 4-6). Berlanti, known for his work in the superhero genre, is involved with this project as he has built a substantial DC universe at the CW. This will be Berlanti Productions’ second high-profile live-action adaptation of a popular Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) animated series for Netflix, joining the upcoming Scooby-Doo origin story. At Netflix, they have also produced the hit thriller drama series “You,” which was co-created by Berlanti.

As an enthusiastic supporter, I haven’t got my hands on any specifics about the plot, characters, or upcoming release of Netflix’s live-action Captain Planet series yet. I can hardly wait to see what they have in store for us!
