After the hit and popular response to Margot Robbie’s live-action Barbie film, Mattel Studios is now working on a new Barbie movie inspired by their famous toy doll series. Unlike the previous version, this upcoming movie will be produced as an animated production.
Who’s involved in the Barbie animated movie?
As reported by Deadline, Mattel Studios has joined forces with Illumination to create an entirely fresh, animated film based on Barbie. This upcoming movie will mark the first Barbie adaptation to hit theaters. It’s expected that Universal Pictures will finance and distribute the movie, given their longstanding partnership with Illumination.
Before embarking on this current project, Mattel had already produced 16 direct-to-video animated Barbie films between 2001 and 2009. Titles like “Barbie in the Nutcracker,” “Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper,” “Barbie: Mermaidia,” and “Barbie & the Diamond Castle” were part of this collection, along with others.
More information about the storyline, leadership team, actors involved, and other specifics regarding the upcoming Mattel projects are currently being withheld. At present, Mattel is actively working on a variety of productions, stemming from their iconic line of toys. For instance, Nicholas Galitzine stars in Amazon’s Masters of the Universe film, John Cena features in Apple’s Matchbox movie, A24’s Barney project has yet to announce its cast, Tom Hanks is attached to Paramount Pictures’ Major Matt Mason, Universal Pictures’ Monster High movie is in development, and Jon M. Chu will direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ Hot Wheels film.
Barbie, under the guidance of director Greta Gerwig who collaborated with Noah Baumbach on the script, starred Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera. Released in theaters, this film amassed more than $1.4 billion globally, becoming the top-grossing movie of 2023. Despite speculation about a sequel, neither Warner Bros., Gerwig, nor Baumbach have confirmed its early development, as reported last December 2024.
