Harry Potter HBO Show’s Time Period Setting Revealed in New Set Photos

Photos leaked online reveal the appearance of Harry Potter’s maternal family, the Dursleys, as they are portrayed in HBO’s ongoing production of their remake version of Harry Potter.

Recently, Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Bel Powley (Petunia Dursley), Daniel Rigby (Vernon Dursley), and Amos Kitson (Dudley Dursley) were seen filming at the London Zoo for Harry Potter. Each of them closely resembles their characters as described in J.K. Rowling’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, published in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Petunia, played by Bel Powley, has blonde hair, while Vernon Dursley, portrayed by Daniel Rigby, sports a mustache, much like their book counterparts.

A significant number of Harry Potter enthusiasts have observed that the characters are dressed in clothing fitting for the 1990s, a decade that J.K. Rowling chose as the setting for her series. The upcoming adaptation seems to be embracing this choice, which is quite different from the films, which never explicitly mentioned the timeline and also lacked an aesthetic reminiscent of the ’90s.

In 2023, it was revealed that HBO’s reimagining of the Harry Potter series will strive to be a truer representation of J.K. Rowling’s cherished book collection. McLaughlin steps into the role of Harry Potter, while Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton share the screen as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The principal cast also features John Lithgow portraying Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner is currently functioning as the lead scriptwriter and program overseer for Harry Potter, while Mark Mylod has been assigned as its primary director. It’s anticipated that filming for the initial season will continue until May 2026, with Season 2 starting a short while afterwards to avoid potential growth spurts among the younger actors, an issue Netflix’s Stranger Things series encountered due to prolonged gaps between production periods.

Harry Potter is slated to premiere on HBO in 2027.
