At long last, 13 years following the release of the last film titled “Rebellion”, “Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht: Rising” is set to grace the movie screens.

The much-awaited follow-up movie is scheduled for release in theaters next year, specifically in February 2026. Fans were treated to a fresh glimpse of what’s in store with the debut of a newly released trailer.

You can watch the trailer here.

12 Years in the Making

Yes, it’s been twelve years since the last movie aired.

Since the release of the Rebellion movie in 2013, fans have harbored anticipation, believing that the following episode would soon be unveiled. This assumption was further fueled when a concept short was presented at Madogatari exhibitions in 2015.

Spoiler: It wasn’t.

At our 10th anniversary celebration in 2021, the official announcement for Walpurgisnacht: Rising was made. Afterward, there were some delays… more waiting. The initial release date had been set for 2024, but it got postponed once more. Now, with fresh footage and artwork unveiled, we can confidently confirm that this project is indeed moving forward!

Trailer Breakdown: Homura’s Still Suffering (And So Are We)

In the trailer, you’ll notice Homura’s voice, translated from its original Japanese, creating an atmosphere while potentially offering clues about the movie’s storyline.

“Yes… Even if this calamity has no name, I know the term used to describe this phenomenon. A fusion of multiple witches. An accumulation of curses beyond imagination. Once, people called it Walpurgisnacht.”

It seems that she appears to be the only one with a memory of Walpurgisnacht from past realities, while the others appear to be unaware of it.

In the promotional content, you’ll find a more detailed glimpse into two enigmatic magical girls hinted at in earlier previews, whose identities remain unknown to all.

Ranges of theories span from “Homura’s dolls” to “pieces of ancient witches” to simply “new characters, so don’t fret.” These fresh appearances are stunning, yet likely filled with sorrow – a characteristic we’ve come to anticipate.

Madoka’s New Look (And That Poster)

Madoka sports a brand-new ensemble, with a skirt suggesting the concept of ‘Cycles’, giving her an intense appearance.

No more soft smiles, this Madoka is serious.

Absolutely, you’ll notice that the other enchanting companions within our team have undergone a transformation as well. Additionally, expect an abundance of merchandise based on this change.

But also, there’s a chance the new looks are part of the story, we will have to see.

Indeed, the entire poster seems rich in symbolism. Some viewers have pointed out a resemblance between Homura and Madoka’s pose and Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, a motif often parodied. Regardless of whether this similarity was deliberate or not, it undeniably aligns with the series’ themes of divinity, humanity, and demons.

By the way, there’s fresh artwork of Homura and Madoka from AnimeJapan 2025 that fans are raving about as if it’s meant for posters. Better start clearing up some room on your walls!

Allow me a moment to view the trailer another 10 times to catch the finer points… Brace yourself for more emotional upheaval in February 2026, stay secure until that time arrives!
