In a surprising twist, the highly successful remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been one of the top-selling games this year. However, it’s unfortunate to learn that the studio responsible for this impressive overhaul is reportedly downsizing, letting go of hundreds of skilled developers.
It appears that Virtuos, the company responsible for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and the speculated Fallout 3 Remastered, has reportedly undergone significant downsizing, affecting approximately 7% of their employees.
Oblivion Remastered dev suffers lay-offs
Based on reports from acclaimed French journalist Gauthier ‘Gautoz’ Andres of Origami, there are ongoing mass job cuts at Virtuos, the development team responsible for Oblivion Remastered and the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid Δ.
Andre has shared news about a large joint development firm employing around 4,200 people worldwide. It appears that this company plans to let go of staff members in both China and France. At present, it’s anticipated that approximately 200 workers may face job losses.
The reporter suggests that one factor leading to job cuts was the high standard of craftsmanship in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as it didn’t generate enough royalties for Virtuos compared to what Bethesda had anticipated, making the release more lucrative for Bethesda but not for Virtuos. Andres clarified this point.
According to the report, Virtuos is reportedly known for going above and beyond in their work on Oblivion, prioritizing exceptional quality over budget constraints and not receiving royalties (no bonuses tied to the game’s success). This approach, the reporter notes, placed immense pressure on the teams involved, creating a situation where the financial viability of the project was called into question due to its status as more of a showcase than a commercially-driven game.
As a collaborator, Virtuos is currently immersed in numerous projects. Notably, they’ve recently completed work on the latest 2.3 update for Cyberpunk 2077, introducing new quests, customization options, and various other enhancements. Essentially, their presence can be felt across multiple fronts.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been deeply saddened by the widespread job cuts in the gaming industry, with Microsoft being one of the hardest hit. As a fan, it’s disheartening to see them let go of 9,100 employees. This decision has led to the cancellation of several exciting projects, such as Perfect Dark, Everwild, and the next MMO from the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online. I can only hope that these talented developers find new opportunities where their skills will continue to shine.
