Back in the day, I was utterly captivated by one device that ruled the roost among home computers – the Commodore 64. Not only was it a household name, but it also held the crown as the ultimate gaming platform during its era. Unfortunately, the company behind this marvel, Commodore, faced financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy in 1994. Yet, nothing can tarnish the C64’s legacy; it remains an icon in technology history. In fact, it holds the title of being the best-selling home computer ever made.
On June 7, 2025, Christian Simpson shared a video on his YouTube channel Retro Recipes. In this video, he detailed the strategy of himself and others in their negotiations with Commodore, aiming to secure an exclusive license. Once secured, they intended to make it accessible to fans. The video also discussed the pitch video he submitted to Commodore, outlining his vision for the brand.
Towards the close of the video, Simpson received a message from Commodore: “Indeed, we’ll give you an exclusive license, but it seems your team is more familiar with us than we are with ourselves. We might consider offering you our entire company.” In a subsequent video, Simpson disclosed that a share purchase agreement had been finalized and that he, along with other Commodore community members, would serve as the executives of the company.
The Commodore 64 Ultimate
On July 12, it was announced that the iconic Commodore 64 would be making a comeback. The catchphrase for this release is “Retro gaming, modern power,” as demonstrated in the announcement video on YouTube. This new model boasts a retro-futuristic design, merging the classic charm of the original Commodore 64 with contemporary LED elements and a transparent keyboard. Additionally, there are two other versions available: the Founders Edition, housed in a golden translucent case, and the Classic Beige Edition that appears to have stepped out of the 80s.
The appearance alone doesn’t tell the whole story about the C64U. It boasts several technical enhancements too, such as HDMI connectivity, WiFi transfer capabilities, and user-friendly USB ports. Unlike other PC emulators of the Commodore 64, the C64U goes a step further by incorporating an FPGA chip that mirrors the original C64 motherboard. Moreover, it claims compatibility with over 99% of games, cartridges, and peripherals from the ’80s and ’90s. The entry-level model of the C64U is priced at $299.99.
Crowdfunding? Not Quite
Currently, you have the opportunity to reserve your spot for the latest C64U model directly from the official Commodore website. This initiative functions similarly to a crowdfunding campaign, but Commodore ensures that it is an authentic pre-order of the C64U, backed by a money-back guarantee. By circumventing popular crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter, Commodore aims to minimize platform fees, thus passing on potential savings to the customers.
The reward for the console will be given straight away, despite it not being available yet, which is common in crowdfunding. This is because the funds collected from sales will go towards manufacturing the product. However, it’s worth noting that customers can choose to cancel their orders before shipment and receive a complete refund.
The Future Of Commodore
The revived Commodore corporation aspires to achieve more than simply selling nostalgic items. On their official website, they express a desire to redefine the way computers function and are utilized. Essentially, they aim for a fresh perspective on computing – one that’s reminiscent of the past. Their goal is to create contemporary technology that feels unburdened, streamlined, and non-addictive.
As I delve deeper into Commodore’s proposed strategies, my enthusiasm grows. It’s refreshing to see a company that is committed to distancing itself from throwaway technology and intrusive platforms. Their aim is to rekindle the charm by prioritizing digital minimalism and fostering human connections over algorithmic control.
What’s Next?
It appears that the Commodore 64 Ultimate serves as an initial step in Commodore’s endeavor to revive the enchantment of how computers once functioned and build upon that legacy. There are whispers that Commodore is developing a new device, but specific details about it are sparse. Simpson hints at a product that harmoniously blends the straightforwardness of traditional technology with the benefits of contemporary hardware.
The continuous advancement of technology brings new features, but not all seem user-friendly. It remains uncertain whether Commodore’s proposed approach to revolutionize computers will be beneficial or necessary. Personally, I am optimistic about a future that embraces a charming retro vibe.
