Emma Watson Banned From Driving After Speeding

Emma Watson has been barred from operating a vehicle due to getting caught for excessive speeding. In the past year, this former Harry Potter actress exceeded the speed limit of 30 mph in an Oxford area. This is now her fourth traffic violation, following three earlier ones.

What happened to Emma Watson?

The authorities have temporarily prohibited Emma Watson from driving for half a year. An automated camera detected her exceeding the speed limit in her £30,000 Audi, which they impounded, as she was traveling at 38 mph in a 30 mph area of Oxford on July 31, 2024.

At High Wycombe Magistrate’s Court, The Little Women was found guilty and fined £1,044. Yet, she failed to appear in the brief court session that lasted only five minutes.

In a court ruling, it was determined that Watson had earned three penalty points on her driver’s license due to past transgressions. Specifically, these points were accumulated from three separate traffic violations that occurred in October and November of 2023, as well as January 2024 (as reported by The Daily Mail).

As a driver in the U.K., I’ve found myself facing some consequences due to my accumulated points. If you gather 12 penalty points over a period of three years, authorities have the power to suspend your driving privileges for six months. The suspension can stretch up to 12 months if you receive another disqualification within that same timeframe. And here’s a bit of a warning: if you get a third disqualification within those three years, you could face an even longer ban – up to two years.

In a court proceeding, it was Mark Haslam who stood for the actress famously known as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. She acknowledged her role in the situation and expressed her readiness to face the consequences, as reported by This Is Oxfordshire.

Besides asking for acknowledgement of her role as a student, they suggested the court should consider giving Emma Watson “credit for her guilty plea.” They explained, “Given her status, it would be appropriate for her to pay a fitting fine.” By 2023, Watson had embarked on a master’s program in creative writing at Oxford University. In February 2025, the university confirmed that she was working towards a DPhil, which is equivalent to a PhD at Oxford.

On the same day and in the same court, Zoe Wanamaker, a well-known actress from the Harry Potter series who starred alongside Watson, was given a ticket for speeding. This incident occurred on August 7, 2024, as she was driving her blue Volvo on the M4 highway in Newbury, Berkshire. Unfortunately, she was exceeding the speed limit of 40 mph by driving at 46 mph.
