The elusive altcoin season—an event so eagerly anticipated, like a child waiting for Christmas morning—has yet to truly arrive. Why? Because, much to the chagrin of the altcoins, Bitcoin is still clinging to its position as the undisputed king of the crypto kingdom. It holds tight to its crown, leading the charge, as altcoins scramble behind it, desperately trying to catch up. But hold on, there’s a faint glimmer of hope: could it be that the altcoins are starting to stretch their legs and, dare we say, begin their own journey? Yes, indeed, the winds of change may be on the horizon as the Top 100 altcoins begin to show signs of life, promising a future season of altcoin glory.
Altcoin Season Index Fires Into The Green
The Altcoin Season Index—a chart that tracks the humble performance of the Top 100 altcoins against the mighty Bitcoin—has been the beacon of hope for altcoin enthusiasts. This index, like a fickle lover, fluctuates between 1 and 100, depending on how many of these altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin over a 90-day stretch. When the figure rises to 75%, it’s like a green light flashing, signaling the official arrival of the altcoin season.
But alas, for the past few months, the altcoins have been thoroughly humiliated in comparison to Bitcoin. The Altcoin Season Index, ever the reliable harbinger of doom for altcoin hopefuls, plummeted to a dismal score of 12 back in June 2025. A mere 12 altcoins managed to outperform Bitcoin over the previous three months. During this time, Bitcoin’s dominance surged like a relentless tidal wave, reaching an impressive 66%, drowning all else beneath its weight. It seemed as if Bitcoin was the only coin on anyone’s mind. And why wouldn’t it be?
But, wait! July has arrived, bringing with it a sense of optimism. The Altcoin Season Index has doubled—yes, you read that right—from its June lows. It now stands proudly at a score of 30. And get this: 32 coins have managed to outperform Bitcoin’s 40% increase in the last three months. Who’s laughing now?
The meme coins, those delightful little jokesters of the crypto world, are leading the charge. PENGU and MemeCore have shot up over 500% in the past 90 days, much to the amusement (and confusion) of the crypto masses. Even HyperLiquid’s HYPE has performed admirably, rising more than 230%. Who says memes can’t be serious business? 🤡
Bitcoin Dominance On The Verge Of Collapse?
Now, let’s talk about Bitcoin dominance. For the last 90 days, it has stubbornly clung to the 60th percentile, refusing to budge. However, over the past two weeks, we’ve seen a slight, dare we say, encouraging drop of 3%, down to 63%. Is this the beginning of a downfall? Is Bitcoin’s reign coming to an end? Oh, how the altcoins must hope!
But before we get too excited, history has shown us that Bitcoin dominance needs to tumble much further for the altcoin season to fully unfurl its wings. In 2017, Bitcoin’s dominance plummeted from a lofty 95% to around 50%, sparking the great altcoin rush. And again in that same year, dominance fell from 70% to 41% before altcoins had their moment in the sun.
So, for the altcoin season to truly ignite, Bitcoin dominance would need to dive further—down to 40%, maybe even 30%. Until then, Bitcoin will remain the market leader, and the altcoins will continue to trail behind, trying to catch a ride on Bitcoin’s coattails. The struggle is real. 🥴
