Superman: James Gunn Teases Mysterious DCU Casting in Easter Egg

An Easter egg featured in Superman teases some exciting DCU casting.

In U.S. cinemas, you can catch “Superman,” a film written and directed by James Gunn. This production is brought to you by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. David Corenswet takes on the role of our main hero, Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor.

What is the Superman Easter egg that teases future DCU casting?

In the DCU film, Lois Lane ventures into the Hall of Justice as part of her investigation. Inside, she comes across a mural depicting the Justice Society of America.

During an event on X, podcast host Neil Vagg disclosed that he was present for a screening of Superman featuring a question-and-answer session with Gunn. According to Vagg’s account, Gunn hinted at the mural containing a well-known actor among its characters, though he did not reveal the identity.

This has sparked much debate that it might be Pierce Brosnan portraying Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate. In 2022, Brosnan took on the role of Doctor Fate in Black Adam, a film that was originally part of the DC Extended Universe but no longer exists. Despite Black Adam not performing exceptionally well at the box office, Brosnan’s performance in the movie received positive feedback from fans.

If it turns out to be correct, it’s quite probable that there should be a narrative solution explaining Doctor Fate’s continuity shift. This adjustment could possibly be handled since Peacemaker Season 2, debuting on HBO Max in August, intends to tackle the DCEU and DCU timelines as well.

The synopsis for Superman, DC Studios’ debut movie set to be released this summer by Warner Bros. Pictures, explains that filmmaker James Gunn brings his unique touch to the classic superhero within a revamped DC universe. By combining action, humor, and emotion, he crafts a Superman who is motivated by empathy and faith in humanity’s goodness.
