“We’re Still Here”: Romero Games Responds After Losing Their Publisher & Firing 100 Devs

Approximately 100 developers were dismissed, causing some misunderstandings that Romero Games might have closed down. However, a recent announcement brings fresh optimism!

Romero Games Is Not Dead

Romero Games has announced that their current project has been unexpectedly terminated because their financial backer decided to pull the funding. Although the studio hasn’t publicly identified the publisher, there are whispers it could be Microsoft or Xbox. The cancellation occurred at a top management level and reportedly impacted several unannounced projects within other studios aside from Romero Games as well.

Brenda Romero emphasized that this choice was unrelated to the team’s efforts, their performance, or the caliber of the project they were working on.

Following the withdrawal of funding by the publisher, more than 100 employees at Romero Games were unfortunately laid off. This situation sparked speculation that the studio might have shut down completely. However, Romero Games has made it clear that although they are currently reassessing their workforce, the company is not closing down. Brenda emphasized that the team is actively considering future options and providing support for those who were affected by the layoffs.

Romero Games consistently exemplifies a game development company that recognizes the significance of contented, satisfied team members in creating exceptional games, and places high priority on the welfare of its workforce… Making this recent situation all the more tragic.

Fortunately, a few publishing companies have contacted them, showing enthusiasm for resuming the abandoned project. At present, Romero Games is carefully considering these proposals, with the aim of securing the studio’s continuation.
