I Know What You Did Last Summer First Reactions Tease ‘Perfect Legacy Sequel’

The first reactions to the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer have been revealed.

What are the first reactions to I Know What You Did Last Summer?

The movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” made its debut in Los Angeles on the 14th of July. Although formal reviews haven’t been released yet, there’s a steady stream of responses about it on social media platform X, and they seem to be quite favorable.

In simpler terms, film critic Scott Menzel praised “I Know What You Did Last Summer” as a “spot-on continuation” and something that the recent Scream movies “should have been but weren’t.” Despite most summer movies being underwhelming according to Menzel, he found “I Know What You Did Last Summer” to be true to its word.

2025’s film reboot was crowned as the top pick by entertainment critic Sophia Soto, who admired its “extraordinary” ensemble, noting their exceptional chemistry.

Juan, a renowned box office analyst, labels I Know What You Did Last Summer as “an exceptional follow-up in a legacy series.” He attributes the strong performances of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to providing some of the most captivating moments within the film.

Sean Tajipour commented that this latest installment delivers both nostalgic thrills from the past and exciting new scares, and he thoroughly enjoyed each nod to the wicked legacy. He feels it respectfully builds upon the original while creating something unique, entertaining, and frightening.

The movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is the fourth installment in the series and serves as a sequel to “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”. Much like its 1997 namesake, this film revolves around five friends who find themselves entangled in a lethal car crash. Rather than disclosing the incident, they choose to conceal their participation. A year later, it appears that someone is aware of their role in the accident and seeks retribution for the hidden crime.

One by one, their friends fall prey to a mysterious murderer. They soon realize this isn’t the first time such events have occurred, and they seek assistance from the only known survivors of the infamous Southport Massacre that took place in 1997.

The main cast of this slasher film includes Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, and Austin Nichols. Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reappear in their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James from previous installments.

As a diehard fan, I’d like to share that I, alongside fellow writer Sam Lansky, had the privilege of being directed by the incredibly talented Jennifer Kaytin Robinson in a project we co-created. Leah McKendrick and I were also honored with story credits. The production was brilliantly orchestrated by Neal H. Moritz.

I Know What You Did Last Summer opens in theaters on July 18.
