James Gunn has shared some new comments about his favorite superhero movies.
Currently, Gunn’s Superman film is being screened in cinemas across the United States. This movie from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures features David Corenswet portraying the main character, Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor.
Before stepping into the role at DC Studios with Peter Safran, I was the one leading the Guardians of the Galaxy films under Marvel Studios. I also directed “The Suicide Squad” in 2021 and created the hit spin-off series “Peacemaker,” which premiered in January 2022 as a gamer like you might say!
What did James Gunn say about his favorite superhero movies?
More recently, Gunn shared his preference for superhero films during an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepard.
He once declared that ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, particularly the first one, is exceptional. He also praised Donner’s Superman and Iron Man. However, he momentarily forgot to mention another movie he thinks is fantastic.
Speaking with Kobini, Gunn once again addressed the matter.
Concerning Iron Man, Gunn stated, “I believe that, after discussing it today with Peter Safran, Iron Man could very well be the top live-action superhero film.” He also mentioned that he thinks “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is the best superhero movie ever produced in animation.
He added, “I believe Into Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse could be one of the best animated films ever made. It’s certainly in the top tier with Pixar and other greats. Additionally, it might just be the finest superhero movie ever produced, in my opinion. It’s magnificent, it’s stunning, it’s touching, and it’s artistic. Everything you could hope for in a film is found here. Whether it’s a superhero film or not, it’s extraordinary.
Even though we’re still unsure about which DCU project James Gunn will be directing next, he has penned every episode for the second season of ‘Peacemaker,’ set to premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
