In simpler terms, James Gunn’s Superman film is enjoyable and entertaining, yet it underscores the fact that the DC Universe doesn’t necessarily require a crossover with Matt Reeves’ gritty Batman crime saga.
After Superman‘s debut, fans are pondering the direction of the DC Universe ahead. We’ve got Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl, and Lanterns lined up for the upcoming year or so, but what about further down the line? There’s definitely more in store, but when does Batman make his appearance?
It’s been pondered whether Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne will join the DC Universe, even though Gunn has repeatedly stated that this seems unlikely. Perhaps he’s speaking truthfully. Maybe there are hidden plans we’re unaware of at present. However, Superman puts forth a strong case for keeping these two worlds distinct from each other.
Robert Pattinson’s Batman doesn’t fit in Superman’s DCU
To begin with, let’s acknowledge some straightforward points: The Batman film by Reeves delves into a somber narrative as Bruce Wayne navigates the intricate history of his family, all while facing a ruthless villain wreaking havoc across Gotham City. In contrast, Superman offers deeper explorations on human nature and global conflicts, but maintains a more playful, action-packed tone, featuring talking monkeys as internet trolls and a canine character more focused on treats than the world’s wellbeing.
The two films have distinctly contrasting moods, which isn’t necessarily negative. In fact, as James Gunn has expressed, each DC Universe project should have its unique touch. This suggests that the Clayface story might lean towards a more somber tone compared to the brighter one we see in Superman.
It’s crucial to keep in mind our ultimate goal in this endeavor, despite the fact that a Justice League project or World’s Finest movie hasn’t been officially announced yet. Fans are eagerly anticipating these characters interacting, and it seems likely that we’ll eventually get there. In other words, it’s essential for these two characters to have some kind of relationship, but based on the current performances of Pattinson and David Corenswet, I can’t help but feel that a natural connection might require some changes to their backstory.
Will Gunn move away from modern Batman’s dark tone?
In Robert Pattinson’s Batman universe, things are significantly distinct from Henry Cavill’s Superman world. While Gotham and Metropolis are separate cities, it’s worth noting that in James Gunn’s movie, Superman gets involved in a global conflict. If Superman were to learn about Colin Farrell’s Penguin, wouldn’t you expect such news would provoke some kind of response from the Man of Steel?
Reeves has full creative freedom over The Batman Crime Saga Epic, while Gunn can develop a chatty version of the Caped Crusader. This dual approach allows DC Universe to explore additional captivating Batman tales, potentially involving characters such as Killer Croc or Man-Bat.
In essence, Gunn’s version of Superman demonstrates that introductions for DC Universe characters don’t necessarily need to be elaborate and drawn-out affairs. By the time Superman appears on screen, Kal-El has been part of this world for three years. The Green Lantern Corps and Justice League are already established entities. Similarly, if Batman makes an appearance without a recap of his identity or reasons behind his attire, it’s unlikely to raise any eyebrows.
As a gaming enthusiast, it’s clear to me that both Superman and Batman franchises can thrive independently, given their distinct tones. It wouldn’t make sense to mix them up right now. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll see a Justice League project where they venture into other DC universes, with Pattinson making a surprise appearance! For now, I’m content letting Gunn shape his universe and Reeves do the same for their respective projects.
