Midway through the year 2025, we find ourselves, and the film industry has offered an intriguing lineup, albeit not overflowing with absolute must-watch cinematic gems thus far. However, one underappreciated gem that deserves a wider audience is James Griffiths’ The Ballad of Wallis Island, starring Carey Mulligan and Tom Basden as musicians and Tim Key as their diehard fan who reunites the duo for an exclusive performance. Now, with the home release of The Ballad of Wallis Island on Blu-ray, audiences have a perfect opportunity to experience this captivating film in the comfort of their homes.
The Synopsis tells us about “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” a story centered around an unconventional lottery winner named Charles (Tim Key), who resides secluded on a distant island. In his mind, he longs for the reunion of his cherished musical duo, Mortimer-McGwyer, comprising Carey Mulligan and Tom Basden. As fate would have it, his wish comes true when these bandmates and ex-lovers agree to perform a private concert at Charles’ island residence on Wallis Island. However, as the event unfolds, old conflicts reemerge as Charles strives frantically to preserve his cherished dream performance.
In their collaborative efforts over time, the duo of Basden and Key create a unique charm in their film, with impeccable comic timing that sets it apart. Key’s character, Charles, is a witty, socially awkward individual, yet full of humor, which provides an interesting juxtaposition to Basden’s Herb – a disillusioned and embittered aging musician, still grappling with the demise of his folk group. While Herb struggles to find solace in life post-breakup, his former bandmate Nell (played beautifully by Mulligan) has moved on, exuding cheerfulness as she embarks on a new life chapter alongside her husband. The narrative unfolds through a series of comedic contrasts, as old conflicts and camaraderie resurface during what is intended to be a heartfelt tribute to Charles’ late wife.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say this film isn’t just about providing laughter; instead, it subtly unfolds into a heartwarming tale of overcoming challenges. Despite things not going as anticipated during the performance, it transforms into an enchanting exploration of the characters. The Blu-ray edition of “The Ballad of Wallis Island” truly captivates with its stunning visuals, faithfully replicating the film’s vivid landscapes shot in Pembrokeshire, Wales. To add to that, the musical numbers, though minor, are beautifully rendered and add a delightful touch to the overall experience.
Regrettably, the Blu-ray version of The Ballad of Wallis Island is rather sparse with no extra content. Not even a trailer for the movie can be found on it. It’s a pity because having Key and Basden’s original 2007 short film titled “The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island” as an addition to the disc would have been a fantastic incentive for purchase.
The Ballad of Wallis Island Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict
Although the movie lacks additional elements to deepen your enjoyment, its 100 delightful minutes make it highly recommended. Full of warmth and numerous chuckles, every actor delivers a stellar performance in this British comedy. Fortunately, the film stands on its own merit as it’s a captivating production that you’ll likely want to rewatch.
