James Gunn’s Superman Sequels Could Have 1 Thing in Common With Man of Steel

In a recent discussion, James Gunn explained the reasoning behind David Corenswet’s Superman potentially taking lives in future DC Universe movies, much like Zack Snyder’s Superman did when he killed General Zod in 2013’s Man of Steel. The upcoming Superman film directed by Gunn has already garnered praise from both critics and fans. Boasting a star-studded cast that includes David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and others, the movie is eagerly awaited.

James Gunn says his Superman could resort to killing, like Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel

At a recent Wired question-and-answer session, director James Gunn, together with actors Rachel Brosnahan, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult, discussed the possibility of the upcoming Superman character taking lethal actions in future stories.

Gunn took out a card with the question “Why doesn’t Superman take lives?” and passed it to Corenswet. Responding to the query, Gunn opined, “I suspect he values the principle of life preservation deeply. I guess that’s not something he’d do.” However, Gunn also noted that he isn’t strictly traditional about Superman killing and said, “If it came down to saving a life, I believe he might be compelled to do so, even though it would be tough for him.

In a manner reminiscent of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman in Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel, the character was faced with a situation where he had to kill General Zod to prevent further destruction. During an interview with GQ last year, Snyder justified this scene by explaining that Zod wouldn’t stop causing chaos and would continue to fight Superman until one of them was dead. Snyder argued that if Superman couldn’t handle such a situation, people would question his authenticity. The director emphasized that Superman had to deal with the situations presented to him and couldn’t choose which ones to confront based on their alignment with his morality.

During a past conversation, Corenswet expressed enthusiasm about potentially portraying Superman in mature or adult-oriented storylines in the future.
