What is the Narivetta story about?

Narivetta tells the tale of Peter Varghese, portrayed by Tovino Thomas, a young man out of work who resides with his mother. Despite viewing many jobs as beneath him, Peter persists in a state of financial hardship. Primarily relying on his wealthy girlfriend, Sofiya, for loans, Peter’s life remains unchanged.

Following his father’s derogatory remarks about his poverty, Sofiya feels deeply saddened, and this sadness intensifies when even his mother concurs with his father. Simultaneously, Peter manages to secure a position within the Kerala police as a constable, unintentionally becoming part of the force.

Upon entering the service, Peter’s passionate nature often led to him being teased by his superiors. Yet, he encountered a kindred spirit in Basheer Ahammed, a more seasoned and soft-spoken constable, who took on the role of a nurturing older brother figure.

As we move along in the narrative, Peter, Basheer, and a group of CRPF police personnel are posted at a mountainous region within the Wayanad district. Their presence is to ensure safety during tribal demonstrations demanding fulfillment of land promises made by the Kerala government back in 2003.

On that crucial day, Basheer fails to show up at the police camp even after several hours had elapsed, which left Peter concerned about his well-being.

How did Basheer go missing?

It wasn’t long before Basheer Ahammed was discovered deceased in the woods, and authorities suspect the local tribe was responsible for his death. This development allowed the police to suppress the protests, but Peter Varghese remains reluctant to believe the tribe bears responsibility for the incident.

During the operation spearheaded by DIG Raghuram Keshavadas (Cheran), who was in charge, against the demonstrators, it is discovered that Basheer was killed by a member of the police special forces.

As a die-hard admirer of truth and justice, I found myself in a state of shock when Peter Varghese disclosed to Raghuram Keshavadas that Basheer had met his untimely end under the orders of none other than the DIG. It was then that the horrifying revelation came to light – a police officer’s life, given in sacrifice, was instrumental in swaying public opinion away from the tribal community‘s cause.

In light of the current predicament faced by the governing party, it has allowed the police to carry out such actions that infringe upon the rights of indigenous communities.

Under pressure from above, Peter Varghese reluctantly follows orders, ultimately succumbing to their demands. Amid escalating protests, law enforcement officers fatally shoot five members of an indigenous tribe, including a seven-year-old child. They then secretly inter the bodies in the depths of the forest.

In the wake of the disturbing events, Peter Varghese, previously known for his impulsive behavior, chooses to abandon his professional path and do what is morally correct. The constable shares all the details with a lawyer, leading to the arrest of everyone implicated in the incident. This action brought justice to the tribal community, a long-awaited resolution.
