Whoopi Goldberg tells David Corenswet how she feels about Superman

On the July 10th edition of The View, Whoopi Goldberg critiqued David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman in James Gunn’s latest film, expressing that she started feeling frustrated while watching him. She explained to Corenswet and his co-star Rachel Brosnahan during their visit, “At first, I thought, ‘This is alright.’ But then, gradually, I found myself becoming annoyed. I couldn’t pinpoint why, and it was because I had momentarily forgotten what kindness looked like.

Goldberg admitted she had anticipated a witty or sarcastic depiction of the character, but soon recognized that Corenswet’s portrayal stayed true to the core of the character. In her words, “I kept hoping Superman would show more quips, and I was expecting something different – but he isn’t like that, he never has been. And that’s why I fell in love with your portrayal of Superman.

She further remarked that her emotional response led her to reassess her beliefs about superheroes. “Am I the one who has changed, that I failed to see your kindness?” she pondered. “Why was I anticipating a transformation from someone you never were?” Goldberg also spoke of her friendship with the late Superman actor Christopher Reeve and expressed that the film brought back memories of what made the character timeless.

Corenswet spoke about the inspiring moment when Will, Christopher Reeve’s son, joined them on set. “To receive such heartfelt support from someone who truly meant it — and then I got a chance to chat with him briefly about his father, his journey, and it was simply amazing to connect those experiences,” he expressed.

As a gamer, stepping into the role of Superman for the very first time felt like a leap of faith. “Let me tell you, it took every ounce of bravery I had… there you are, exposed and vulnerable. One wrong move and everything could fall apart.
