Pokemon characters that James Carter Cathcart voiced listed
In 1998, Cathcart became a part of the Pokemon universe, which was rapidly gaining fame. With his multi-faceted vocal skills, he breathed life into numerous significant characters.
James
In the thrilling world of Pokémon, I, James Carter Cathcart, took on the role of none other than Team Rocket’s melodramatic, yet tender-hearted villain – my namesake. From the 2000s onwards, I never wavered from this path. Whether hatching plots or shedding tears for a lost Pokémon, I brought my character to life with a voice that echoed through the screens of many fans. James transformed from just an animated adversary into a beloved character – a testament to the power of great storytelling and memorable performances.
Meowth
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say another significant role Cathcart played was that of Meowth, the witty, bilingual Pokémon who always tagged along with Team Rocket’s James and Jessie. Amongst the Pokémon, Meowth stood out due to his exceptional ability to converse in human language just like us.
Professor Oak & Gary Oak
Instead of just focusing on villains and comical sidekicks, James Carter Cathcart lent his voice to the compassionate Professor Oak and his self-assured grandson, Gary Oak, in Pokémon. These characters significantly contributed to Ash’s adventures.
Other roles: Fergus, Snubbull, and Todd Snap
James Carter Cathcart’s adventure with Pokémon started from “Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back,” where he lent his voice to the minor but impactful character Fergus. Additionally, he voiced Snubbull in the short film “Pikachu’s Vacation,” and played Todd Snap, the photographer, in “Pokemon Snap” and subsequent anime episodes.
In 2023, Cathcart retired from voice acting after receiving a diagnosis of throat cancer. Sadly, he passed away in July 2025, as confirmed by his wife. Apart from his iconic role in Pokemon, he lent his voice to Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh! and various other titles such as One Piece, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, and Shadow the Hedgehog. However, it’s his work in Pokémon, where he voiced both heroes and villains, that had the most significant impact.
