Reflecting back on my extended journey in daytime TV, I, Susan Seaforth Hayes, couldn’t help but ponder over the significance of it all, especially after not receiving a Daytime Emmy Award in 2018 when Bill and I were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

She jokingly reminisced about the initial stages of the Daytime Emmys, back when the categories were less specific and the overall mood was more festive. Over time, she transformed from a novice to an experienced actor, receiving nominations across different categories. In a recent Instagram post, she humorously acknowledged that she hasn’t been overlooked by all the judges of NATAS throughout her career. This was a nod to her previous nominations, hosting tenure, and the 2018 award she won with Bill Hayes, which they still proudly display on their piano.

Seaforth Hayes emphasized to fans that she’s experienced every stage of soap opera acting – from being new, popular, maturing, and currently mellow. At 82, she takes pride in still working and growing with her character, Julie, as they both navigate the challenges of aging.

One particularly moving aspect of her letter discussed the borderline between acting and personal reality. Referencing the emotional moments when Julie learns about Doug’s passing and bids farewell, Seaforth Hayes penned, “It seemed to me that maybe the judges thought I wasn’t acting… Regardless, my portrayal was grounded in a genuine love shared by an audience that adored him just as much.

She emphasized that the most fulfilling part for her was portraying Doug and Julie’s love faithfully on screen, which in turn offered fans a peek into her own experiences. ‘After losing my husband, I am not just an actress in this tale; I am a widow.’
