Erica Messer hints at a time jump and Voit’s return in Criminal Minds Season 19

Erica Messer, the Showrunner and Executive Producer, has confirmed that Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 (or Season 19) will present a one-year time leap and further explore the character of Elias Voit, played by Zach Gilford. As stated by Messer to Entertainment Weekly, “Elias Voit will appear in every episode of Season 19.” She continued, “He is incarcerated once more, but not in the same manner as he was during Season 17. Elias will serve as a valuable asset for us this time around.

In Season 18, after years of being an elusive murderer known as Sicarius, Voit finally confessed to his crimes and was sentenced to life imprisonment. As a result, Messer pointed out that Voit has become a well-known figure, attracting media attention similar to the buzz surrounding Ted Bundy. Messer went on to say, “We effectively have Voit in custody as a celebrity.” Messer also verified that Voit’s network has been dismantled, and the BAU will not be revisiting this storyline in Season 19.

The previously unnoticed figure of Voit is now struggling with unexpected limelight. As Messer clarified, his life was hidden away from public scrutiny…He had meticulously concealed all his secrets underground, but now, much like Ted Bundy, his actions have drawn attention he doesn’t want.

In Season 19, the BAU team will return to their usual weekly case investigations. Additionally, TVLine’s interview with Messer revealed additional character developments. Starting from Episode 2, Luke (Adam Rodriguez) will be part of a significant storyline, and the relationship between Tara (Aisha Tyler) and Rebecca will continue without any major conflicts, as stated by Messer.

Moreover, Messer also announced the comeback of familiar faces and subtly suggested that JJ (played by A.J. Cook) and other team members will experience further emotional growth after the emotionally charged ending of Season 18. Work on the upcoming season has already begun.
