James Gunn Laid the Foundation of Infinity Saga in 3 Minutes

James Gunn, the director behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series for Marvel Studios, shared that it only took him a quick three minutes to develop the storyline for the Infinity Stones, a crucial element in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These fictional artifacts played a pivotal role in the narrative of The Infinity Saga, encompassing the initial three phases of the MCU.

James Gunn explains how he came up with Infinity Stones’ backstory

During an interview with GQ, Gunn reflected on the memorable works he’s been involved with throughout his career, and the topic of his time at Marvel Studios naturally emerged. The director revealed that he crafted the origins and significance of the Infinity Stones within the MCU in just a mere three minutes.

The director-writer of Superman explained that he was unaware of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s phases before quickly developing the backstory for the Infinity Stones in the franchise. Gunn revealed, “I only knew about the Infinity Stones when they suggested, ‘We’ve been contemplating and believe some of these objects might be Infinity Stones. Could you write down what the Infinity Stones represent?’

Gunn clarified that when he scripted the part where Benicio del Toro’s Taneleer Tivan / The Collector describes what the Infinity Stones are, it was essentially just him taking three minutes to write it out. He further mentioned that this brief scene was then expanded into the entire concept of the Infinity Stones. Gunn emphasized that there were no specific guidelines from Marvel about the Infinity Stones other than they would be represented by a red and blue object.

In the interview, Gunn clarified that the concept for the Infinity Stones wasn’t established initially. He went on to share an interesting tidbit – the Power Stone was originally going to be red as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Marvel opted to depict the Reality Stone as red in Thor: The Dark World instead. As a result, the Power Stone was changed to its current purple color during post-production.

Significantly, the Infinity Stones draw inspiration from the original Infinity Gems, previously known as the Soul Gems, in the Marvel Comic books.
