As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that Will Friedle, the star of Batman Beyond, has hinted at potentially reprising his role as Terry McGinnis in a possible continuation of the beloved animated series. In the original show, I remember Terry stepping into the shoes of Batman when an older Bruce Wayne decided to hang up his cape after years of crime-fighting.
An actor who starred in Boy Meets World played the character throughout all three seasons of Batman Beyond (1999-2001). Additionally, he provided the voice for this hero in various DC animated films like the 2000 release Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and 2024’s Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Why won’t Will Friedle voice Batman Beyond again?
At Animate Columbus, Friedle recently expressed that he’s not keen on reprising his role as Terry McGinnis/Batman in a possible return of Batman Beyond, following the passing of Kevin Conroy, the iconic voice actor of Bruce Wayne/Batman, in 2022. He stated that it seems improper for him to take on the character again without Conroy.
If someone had asked me that question three years ago, I would have eagerly replied, “Absolutely, sign me up for the microphone immediately!” However, with Kevin no longer around, I’m unsure if I could take on the roles again. It might be necessary to recast both characters. Without having Bruce by my side as Terry, I don’t believe I could pull it off.
Previously in 2023, during an interview similar to Friedle’s, Star Wars alumnus Mark Hamill expressed similar feelings, disclosing that he too has stepped down from voicing the Joker. He emphasized that he would only resume the role if Conroy was the one portraying Batman.
Whenever someone called to offer me the role of the Joker, my initial reaction was always, ‘Is Kevin playing Batman too?’ If the answer was affirmative, I’d eagerly accept. Working with Kevin was like being Laurel to his Hardy. Without him by my side, it just doesn’t feel like there’s a Batman for me.” (Said by me as a fan)
